Original blood-red tooled morocco with gilt lettering at upper cover a. E. G. text with eight mounted albumen prints of drawings by Ehninger all approximately 5 1/4 X 7 1/2" on rectos of plain sheets. Binding strong darkened at spine and edges with old wear recently treated text strong with hinges repaired light marginal dampstain to all leaves but contents clean of foxing prints in nice condition with good tones; with contemporary engraved bookplate at front pastedown of Erastus Corning 1794-1872 founder of the New York Central Railroad . Van Haaften 33. A volume frequently overlooked in the history of the photographically illustrated book. This was the first American use of original photographs of illustrations for a literary work. Heretofore only through various mechanical printing processes could an artist's illustrations be reproduced faithfully primarily etchings and lithographs with almost all original illustrations on paper copied by others onto plates for engravings. Unpaginated aprox 40 leaves. Photographic reproductions of paintings had been included in a number of books but photographs of drawings specific to a particular literary work had not been previously attempted; the hope was a level of reproduction never before achieved. The process was expensive engravings were far cheaper than hand-mounting photographic prints the public yawned and the concept became an idea before its time to be resuscitated several decades later when the technique of photoengraving was perfected enabling publishers to put photographic reproductions of drawings directly onto printing plates. Cabinet Self-Portrait Advertisement Card for Early California and Nevada Photographer William H. Pilliner.

187576511Reno Nev.: W. H. Pilliner Pioneer Artist ca. 1875. Original albumen self-portrait measuring 3 5 /8 x 5 3/8 on original light yellow mount measuring 4 1/8 x 6 1/2 inches. Printed in a gothic-like font beneath the image "W.H. Pilliner Pioneer Artist Reno Nev." A good and sharp image of this stylish photographer."William H. Pilliner 1826-1902 was born in the Dutch East Indies. He went to San Francisco as a youth eventually learned photography and in 1858 had his first gallery in Red Bluff California. In 1863 he married Eliza Jane McGuire born about 1843 who came to California from Missouri in 1850. For the next several decades they and their children lived intermittently in California Nevada Montana and Idaho where Pilliner operated various photography studios. His son Frederick John Pilliner also became a photographer and father and son operated a gallery together for a brief time in Silver City Idaho in 1891" Online Archive of California. We know from newspaper reports that Pilliner was in the Reno area in 1875. Prior to that he had a studio in Grass Valley from 1870-1875 and after Reno we find record of him being in Virginia City in 1882. He must have wandered quite a bit as in 1876 just one year later there is an ad for his Chromo Photo services in Elko Nev.The carte de visite was displaced by the larger cabinet card in the later half of the 1860s. Both were most often albumen prints the primary difference being the cabinet card was larger and usually included extensive logos and information on the reverse side of the card to advertise the photographer's services. But in this case there is no back printing as what he was advertising was right there on the front: himself and his services as a Pioneer Artist. W. H. Pilliner, Pioneer Artist unknown
