Friedman is the only still photographer ever voted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His credits include: 'The Sound of Music' 'Doctor Doolittle' 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' 'Enter the Dragon' 'King Kong' 'Carrie' and 'Grease' among many others. It is the 1980s shots of partiular interest to me of course. Friedman is notably the man behind the still shots used in much of the advertising and promotion for the Rambo films as well as Rocky IV THE CLASSIC STALLONE SHOTS WITH THE AMERICAN FLAG AFTER HIS DEFEAT OF IVAN DRAGO and Total Recall.

The work of Dave Friedman is one of the cases where everyone knows the photos but few look past what they see to discover the origins and/or the creator. Dave holds a special place here at Back in Time and we are always looking for examples of his work. NOTE: THIS IS A HEAVY BOOK AND WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL POSTAGE. Dalton Watson Fine Books hardcover

A unique experience made possible by Ertuğ & Kocabıyık publishers of fine books on Byzantine and Ottoman art Panoramic Landscapes of Cappadocia is a work of art in its own right that takes the reader into and through the astonishing world of the valleys of Cappadocia. The term "Cappadocia" today refers to a specific region of volcanic valleys and bizarre rock formations where extraordinary physical surroundings and human ingenuity have combined to create an intriguing and dramatic landscape of sometimes bewitching sometimes monumental beauty. Successive civilizations and cultures have left their mark here excavating and carving houses tombs workplaces and shrines out of the solid rock. Far from destroying the landscape however their efforts actually enhanced it creating structures for posterity that are as exceptional as they are one with nature. Like its subjectPanoramic Landscapes of Cappadocia is also unique as a book offering a stunning array of broad panoramic views of this magical world. The images are accompanied by an informative introductory essay and commentaries by Catherine Jolivet-Lévy a respected scholar on Cappadocian archaeology and medieval art. Panoramic images belong to Ahmet Ertuğ.

Note: Exceptionally large book 48x37 cm. and may require additional postage.
Ertuğ & Kocabıyık Publications hardcover

The architectural and artistic heritage of Cappadocia is unique in the world. This book seeks to heighten the reader's awareness of the artistic wealth and architectural diversity of Cappadocia focusing in particular on the murals that adorn its churches and sanctuaries. Nineteen structures are thoroughly presented in this volume. They were chosen mainly for the quality of their murals some of which rank among the most important treasures of the Byzantine and Medieval legacy. The superb photographs of Ahmet Ertuğ meticulously capture the interiors of these wonderful churches in astonishing detail many of them in remote and all but inaccessible locations. These extraordinary images are accompanied by an authoritative and highly readable text by Catherine Jolivet-Lévy of Paris University a respected specialist with thirty years of research and publication on the cultural heritage of Byzantine and Medieval Cappadocia. The result is a splendid book that guides the reader towards a deeper appreciation of the region and a better understanding of its art and history.

Note: Exceptionally large book 35x48 cm. and may require additional postage.
Ertuğ & Kocabıyık Publications hardcover

It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess Aphrodite and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire first-second centuries AD when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity the functioning of empire religious conflict and accommodation and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions for example at Hadrian's villa at Tivoli. The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods heroes emperors benefactors philosophers and athletes as well as mythological groups decorative figures and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site.

Note: Exceptionally large book 48x35 cm. and may require additional postage.
Ertuğ & Kocabıyık Publications hardcover
