Women's Labor History and Telephone Switchboard Operations in New York circa 1900 to 1958

Telephone operator photo archive circa 1900 to 1958 documents women's labor within telephone exchange systems showing how urban communications depended on trained female operators seated at switchboards connecting calls handling information and maintaining the human infrastructure behind early and mid twentieth century telephone service. The material documents telephone communication labor through photographs of switchboard rooms operators wearing headsets plug boards supervisory presence and grouped clerical activity revealing how connection work operated in practice before automated dialing fully displaced manual exchange work. The archive supports research into women's wage labor communications history gendered office work New York telephone service and the disciplined workplace culture that positioned young women as the public voice and operational center of the telephone network. The archive consists of six black-and-white photographs including five silver gelatin photographs and one early albumen photograph with images measuring from approximately 3.5 x 4.25 inches to 7 x 9 inches. The date range appears to extend from the early twentieth century to 1958 based on the later dated images. Several photographs show women seated in tight rows facing large switchboards wearing heavy headsets with horn mouthpieces and working among dense arrangements of cords and plugs. The early albumen photograph shows a row of women facing the switchboards while a female supervisor watches over the room indicating both the gendered hierarchy and procedural discipline of the exchange floor. One image shows an operator turning toward the camera with a plug in hand smiling while gesturing toward the board. Four smaller photographs dated 1958 show teams of women moving between boards and a small group with paperwork behind the operating area; pencil inscriptions on the versos identify the location as New York. The photographs are valuable because they make visible the labor system behind telephone service: rows of operators standardized equipment supervisors paperwork and the coordinated manual routing of calls. They also record the gendered character of communications work in which women's voices posture speed and manner were made part of the service itself. Light handling wear minor edge wear and expected age toning; images remain crisp with equipment and personnel details clearly visible; overall very good. Softcover bound in light tan wraps titled within an illustration on the front cover and with an advertisement & price list on the rear cover. The covers are quite stained and the corner of the front cover & the spine are chipped. 51 & 1 pages illustrated with a portrait frontispiece and 23 full page patterns. There is damp staining along the edges of several pages and a tiny perforation through the first 4 leaves. The frontispiece is detached but present with chipping and heavy damp staining to the front edge. There is additional staining to a few pages. Good.RARE and not surprisingly so as the price printed on the title page is 10 dollars."During my travels and observations abroad and in this country where I met the best professionals in the trade I had an opportunity to find out that a work on unusual garments such as could not be committed to memory and which were utterly impossible to produce at all by many cutters on account of its lapse of time between such garments were made. All edges in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Title page with decorative text printed in a number of different period typefaces. All addition text throughout is finely printed in a cursive typefont. An album consisting of a series of 12 mounted albumen photographs reproducing original paintings of landscapes in New England and Northeastern Canada by British artist C.J. Charles Jones Way 1835-1919. During his career Way was noted for his depictions of North American and European landscapes and seascapes. From 1858 Way settled in Montreal where he established an art studio and often collaborated with pioneering Montreal-based photographer William Notman 1826-1891 who had set up one of the most noted early photography studios in the city. Here Notman photographs Way's work with a keen eye and attention to detail. Locations depicted in the images include: the White Mountains New Hampshire Mount Desert Island Maine The Gaspe Coast Quebec Levis/Quebec City Montreal and Niagara Falls. The final five images show areas in the vicinity of Saguenay River Quebec. Each of the 12 plates is tissue-guarded with the images and text caption below in landscape orientation. Plates measure approx. 17 3/4 x 12 3/4". The photographs themselves vary slightly in size but most measure approx. 10" x 6". Table of plates at the front. Binding with light sunning to the spine and edges of the covers. Covers with some light scratches and a few small stains. Head of spine rubbed with some light cracking along the front hinge. Interiors mostly clean with a few sporadic instance of light smudges and/or stains to the endpapers and/or margins of plates. Images throughout clean and vibrant. Eighteen plates contain 20 engravings of Allston's sketches each protected by a respective flyleaf. "I. i.e.J. and L. i.e. S. W. Cheney engraved directly on plates daguerreotyped by Southworth and Hawes . of Boston. Josiah Hawes . used a special rectilinear lens of his own design to photograph the art which the Chaneys Cheneys engraved over. FROM THE INTRODUCTORY PAGES: "The Outlines and Sketches contained in this Volume are a part of those found in Mr. Allston's Studio in Cambridge Massachusetts after his death in July 1843. They consist in great part of compositions hastily sketched in chalk and never carried further; among them however are a few Outlines in umber on canvass which although more carefully done should not be considered as finished Outlines since they were of the figures in the different compositions vary form that of life to a few inches in length; and where it was necessary to reduce them for engraving the daguerreotype was used by which the image was conveyed to the engraver's plates prepared for that purpose and there fixed by tracing the line through the silver." CONDITION: Ex-library with consistent library spore from Louisville Free Public Library. VG as cover shows wear and soiling. Foxed throughout yet engravings are still quite spectacular. Several plates contain a one inch open tear at the foredge yet has not compromised the integrity of the engravings. Large dampstain within the last several leaves at the corner. A beautiful portfolio that holds some sense of mystery and intrigue within its images. At 5 lbs. due to it's very large size and weight an additional shipping charge will likely apply.
