Soule was a famous stereo-photographer from Washington Street Boston MA closely associated with the prolific Kilburn Brothers of photographic stereoview fame; image approx. 3 1/4" x 5 1/4" size; the mount card adds about an inch surrounding and the later framing adds about 1 3/4" border; some old discoloration noted on the mount card and a little in the image not very intrusive to the view; framed in a new wood surround and with glass; light wear; very good condition; interesting American photographic history ephemeral item. 190024106Chicago ca. 1900. Hardcover. 4to. Maroon cloth gilt-stamped boards scuffed and frayed at corners and spine ends. Binding a bit shaken but secure. Multiple photographs per page mounted recto and verso throughout with additional photos and ephemera laid in. Some rippling and small tears to photos/pages. About very good minus. <br/><br/>A copy of "Integral" the Illinois Institute of Technology yearbook for 1900 repurposed as a photo album and memorializing the domestic life of a close family group. Other scenes include a mixed-sex bathing party at the shore in the heavy Edwardian-styled swimming costumes of the day; two young men frolicking and lounging around a gazebo in the manner of an Edward Gorey illustration; two young women both dressed in men's heavy overalls and roughhousing or acting out a tableau; and portraits of new parents with their infant. A few mystifying poses most likely preserve some long-lost jokes while others capture many moments of physical affection in an era not known for easy emotional display in photographs. <br /> <br />Laid in are several newspaper clippings concerning members of the Ridenour family presumably pictured within; the latest dates from the 1920s though the vast majority of photographs all appear to date from the early 1900s with fashions not far ahead of those worn in those photos still visible from the yearbook itself. A small number of photos from ca. the 1910s show young men brandishing sledgehammers part of the "Red Path Chautaqua Crew" for the traveling-circuit tent show. <br /> <br />Note that one photograph towards the end of the album shows two men backs turned to the camera wearing white robes with pointed hoods; one is decorated with the crude logo of a skull and two crossed flags or axes. It is possible that these figures are wearing the costume of new Freemason initiates rather than the KKK robes they resemble the insignia resembles the Oddfellows skull-and-crossbones and the Klan was not universally identified with such costumes until 1915 and after. The identification is thus uncertain but the iconography is nevertheless highly disturbing to a modern eye; and with its placement following page after page of harmonious domestic scenes it serves as a reminder of the violent allegiances of some white Chicagoans in the period leading up to the city's anti-black riots of 1919. hardcover books

Clark Street in what was Chicago's fashionable Near North Side. The frame is a bravura creation of rich complexity easier viewed than described. "Romantic friendship between American men acquired a different kind of social prestige and meaning within the Civil War. No sooner did young recruits leave the shelter and ties of home and family than they were thrust into mutual dependence care and collective terror of being comrades in arms. Intimate ties were tacitly encouraged as a result of the soldier's need to steel himself for battle to prepare emotionally for the prospect of injury and death and for having to inflict such suffering to others." - Deitcher p. 87. 1860CAT0150New York 1860. An unusual image of a Zouave soldier in an outdoor setting holding a horse. During the Civil War roughly 95 Zouave regiments formed adopting the names uni-forms and sometimes fighting styles of the North African Zouave brigades. The bulk - about 70 of the regiments - fought for the Union cause. We were unable to determine anything else about this soldier though the image was found in a New York estate. New York was home to two of the most famous Zouave brigades the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry and the 11th New York Volunteer In-fantry. A nearly fine image with a slight crease housed in a full case. unknown books

1893019029Boston: Joseph Knight 1893. Book. Very good condition. Hardcover. First Edition. Oblong quarto 4to. According to the September "Publisher's Weekly" this book was issued late in 1893 by Joseph Knight of Boston. It was done with the cooperation of Ernest Edwards' New York Photo-Gravure Company. Essentially an oblong quarto view book it features ten superb Japan-tissue photogravures by Edwards' New York concern. Printed on Japan paper. Bound in cloth with silver stamp and fancy paper side. Quarto 9 ½ x 11 ½. It includes two images by Davis & Sanford "A Figure Study and A Young Artist" two images by H.P. Robinson "A Trespass Notice and He Never Told His Love" and one each by Geo. H. Taber Jr. "Away-Back" D. P. Watts "A Corn Roast" Mrs. N. Gray Bartlett "Bric-a-brac" Mrs. M.B. Greenwood "On Fishing Bent" W.C. Walker "In The Woods" and P. Thiery "Feeding the Poultry". There is a short gift inscription on the front endpaper: Christmas 1893. There is minor soiling and foxing to most of the pages. Other than the title page the volume which retailed for $2.00 features no letterpress of any kind. The delicate tissue plates are each tack-glued at the corners and tipped-in centered on each of the ten leaves. These delicate and finely-printed examples of hand-pulled photogravures are representative of the type of artistic work being done in the United States in the 1890's.
