Very good. - sc An original 4-3/4 inch high by 7 inch wide albumen print by Carlo Ponti depicting the Palazzo Vendramin the residence the Duchesse de Berry purchased from the descendants of the Vendramin Calergi family in 1844. The image shows the palatial front of the Palazzo its balcony overlooking the canal and front door opening up near a gondola moored next to the columns at the foot of a few steps. A sculpture adorns the garden wall at right and the facade of another home can be viewed along the right of the image. Mounted by the photographer onto 8-3/4 inch high by 11-3/4 inch wide light green mat board with printed white double rules framing the image. The photographer's blind stamp "Carlo Ponti / Venezia" is embossed at the bottom of the mat and the image is identified in ink on the mat below the photograph. There are a very few tiny spots in the image possibly in the negative. The recto of the mat is slightly soiled with much offsetting to the verso. A very good beautiful photograph. <p>The Swiss-born Italian photographer Carlo Ponti c.1823-1893 moved to Venice in 1852 after having studied photography in Paris. Having opened his own studio which catered to tourists he sold photographs in all formats. He won many awards including one which he was awarded in 1862 for his invention of the Magalethoscope an apparatus which allowed photos to be viewed through a large lens which created the illusion of depth and perspective. It is not surprising given this invention that he was also the optician to Italy's King Victor Emanuel II. [Venice, circa 1860's]. unknown
189374149New York: N.p. 1893. An elaborate Easter greeting for 1893. Homemade string tied Easter card with 8 stiff leaves measuring 15 x 11 1/2 inches. Each leaf with pressed flora of the region and an original photograph the photographs are all trimmed into shapes of which the meaning is lost and are all outlined in gilt. The title leaf done on even thicker paper is calligraphic and with pressed flowers and reads as above. The following leaves are as follows; "Totman's Gulf; Lorraine" and bears a large cyanotype of a waterfall surrounded by pressed flora; "Lover's Walk; Sylvan Beach" with a large cyanotype of a forested trail with a pug sitting in the middle surrounded by pressed flora; "Lorraine Gulf" with a large cyanotype of a bridge over a river surrounded by pressed flora; "Salmon River" with a large cyanotype of a bend in the river surrounded by pressed flora: "Lake of the Isles St. Lawrence River" with a large albumen showing a canoe on the lake surrounded by pressed flora; "In the Canadian Channel. River St. Lawrence" with a large albumen showing what appears a flooded channel surrounded by pressed flora: Sanint Lawrence River" with an abumen photograph of a shack of the riverbank surrounded by pressed flora. Some of the flora have fallen away and the front cover has two addition holes purpose unknown. A charming glimpse into handmade sentiments in the 19th century. One can almost hear a mother telling her teenage children to make a specially nice card for grandma this Easter. And they put a lot of effort into this. N.p. unknown

188323168Portland Oregon: Davidson Photo 1883. Very good. 5.5" x 8" albumen photograph on a 9.25" x 12" mount. Titled "Cabinet Gorge Clark's River looking down stream" with further caption for the series: "Scenery Along the Line of the Northern Pacific Railroad Company Clarke's Fork Division." Credited "Davidson Photo. Portland Oregon." Very good condition with small chips at corners of mount contrast a bit light. This series of views was apparently taken to celebrate and promote the completion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Construction had begun in Minnesota in 1870 and the final section was completed on September 8 1883. An article published in the Helena Montana Semi-Weekly Herald on July 19 1883 reports that "Mr. Ed Stone General Agent of the Land Department of the Northern Pacific Railroad is the possessor of a large album of views entitled "Oregon and the Pacific Northwest." Glimpses of pretty sports along the valley of the Columbia River from northern Montana to the Pacific Ocean. Scenery along the line of the Northern Pacific railroad showing the new Trans-continental route. The photographs were made by I.G. Davidson of Portland Oregon.There can be no grander promise of pictures of fine scenery given to any travelers than will be viewed by the tourists over the Northern Pacific railroad when it is completed through to the Pacific ocean this fall." Isaac Grundy Davidson 1845-1922 moved to Oregon from Illinois in 1850 and opened a photography studio in Portland in 1878. Mautz describes him as "one of the Northwest's premier photographers. While as expected no date is printed we can confidently surmise that the photograph could only have been captured between the years of 1883-1900 when the proprietor A.D. Cooper was active in the town of Virden and the city of Brandon Source: the Manitoba Historical Society; MHS Resources: Manitoba Photographers 1858 to Present. A not uncommon photograph for this period depicting a stern-looking mother with her three young children one daughter and two boys with the children standing atop a raised platform no doubt furnished by the studios of the photographer. Excepting some light edgewear and one small crease to the left corner of the board both photograph and board remain quite well-preserved; very good. <br/><br/>We could not locate any instances of the photography produced by the studios of A.D. The photographs were issued by "BTE Guerard" a photography and estampe publisher located at "204 Rue de Rivoli" by "Au Jardin des Tuileries" with his label on the verso of each photo Vintage sepia photos of famous Parisian landmarks including the Le Boulevard Saint-Martin the Arc of Triomphe the opera the place de la Concord Saint Germain and the Madeline on Rue Royale. Some of the images show Paris streets before the automobiles with multiple horse-drawn carriages and Parisians in nineteenth century clothing. One other image shows a panoramic view of famous Paris bridges on the Seine with the Notre Dame in the background. A look back through time at the famous streets and monuments of Paris. Interestingly the architecture remains the same to date but the streets have grown crowded and the carriages replaced with cars. Images are sharp with good contrast. All cabinet cards in very good condition. unknown

Contemporary gold- and blind-tooled burgundy buckram with the title and volume number lettered in gold on the front and spine a double fillet border on both boards blind-tooled turn-ins gold and burgundy floral end papers gilt edges. Folio. With 50 photographic reproductions in black and white mounted onto thick passe-partout leaves separated by thinner leaves onto which typed descriptions are mounted. 2 volumes. Remarkable photographic album beautifully reproducing the paintings from the Shah Jahan Album also known as the Kevorkian Album. The album compiled by the Mughal emperor Jahangir 1569-1627 and his son Shah Jahan 1592-1666 contains miniatures from the best painters of the Mughal era such as Govardhan Mansur Daulat Payag and Chitarman with calligraphic text by famous calligraphers such as Mir' Ali Haravi. The 50 exquisite photographs accurately reproduce the details of the original miniatures highlighting the iconographic and stylistic richness of Mughal art.Mughal albums also known as muraqqa usually included existing works in the patrons collection as well as works created specifically for the album such as paintings and drawings folios from preparatory pattern books and calligraphy specimens. They were not bought ready-made but compiled over a longer period of time by its owners. Emperor Jahangir commissioned the first folios for the Shah Jahan Album around 1620 and his son continued after his death. Shah Jahan's additions are stylistically different from Jahangir's with more portraits and illumination and the inclusion of calligraphy pages. After his death the muraqqa now with 39 miniatures passed onto his son Aurangzeb 1618-1707 who did not commission any more folios. The muraqqa left the royal library in the early 19th century and was likely acquired by an art dealer from Delhi who added 11 miniatures around 1820. These were made in the 19th century but imitated the 17th-century style of the others. In the 20th century the muraqqa was bought by the New York art dealer Hagop Kevorkian who sold 9 folios to the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington and the remaining 41 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where they still reside.The spectacular Shah Jahan Album is a collection of 50 single-page paintings which include intimate nature studies and portraits of the royal family and various dignitaries framed by a beautiful floral border. Each painting is faced by a single page of illuminated calligraphy made by renowned calligraphers. The photographs in the present work each mounted in a passepartout carefully reproduce the single-page paintings and three of the four calligraphic pages that open the collection. They are accompanied by a foreword and a short description of each painting which appear to be taken from an auction catalogue and were likely added later. A valuable testament to the interest in Mughal art in the 20th century this collection constitutes a seemingly unique iconographic resource as we have not been able to find another copy. There is no mention of a publisher or photographer but the quality of the prints suggests careful production intended for and commissioned by a scholar or collector specialising in Indian art. The present copy was part of the collection of Dr Ebadollah Bahari 1929-2018 noted historian of Persian art author of Bihzad master of Persian painting 1996 and benefactor of the Bahari Curatorship of Persian Collections at the Bodleian Libraries University of Oxford.The boards have been rubbed with minor loss of material on the back board of both volumes the joints are slightly weakened but the structural integrity of the bindings is still intact. Some of the mounted descriptions are lightly foxed. Otherwise in good condition. hardcover

The Reading Crane and Hoist Company later Roeper Hoist and Crane Works installed cranes throughout the Northeast many of which are pictured here. Many pictures show designs patented in the late 1890s making the production date most likely circa 1900-1910. The photographs are well composed proto-modernist and quite detailed. Unrecorded in OCLC. 189076014V.p.: V.p. 1890-1920. The soft leather-covered album measures 15.5 x 11.5 inches and contains fifty extant pages containing a total of 164 original photographs of varying sizes. The album has had some of its pages removed and there are missing photos from extant pages. There are an additional 23 fine photos either unmounted or on partial pages that have been removed from the album but are present in this offering. Altogether there are 187 photographs in this grouping. Several of the photos are over 9 x 13 inches in size. The photographs whether still in the album or separated from it are in Fine condition. Harriette Hattie Elizabeth Hill Foster Goldnamer 1868-1940 assembled the album and wrote the white ink photo descriptions in a wonderful cursive hand. According to Hughes’ Artists in California Hattie married “… Daniel Foster and moved to Fresno CA in 1886. In 1904 she moved to San Francisco where she studied at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute and privately with Frederick Bauer. A widow by 1910 she had married Wm. Goldnamer. She then settled in Oakland where she remained until her demise on May 2 1940.†As an artist Hattie worked in charcoal and oil and specialized in still life and figure studies. This album is one of three family photographs she put together that we acquired together. Although the family names are the same in all three each stands alone and we are offering them individually. All but nine of the 164 photographs in the album are fine portraits of her family and friends and several of herself. Surnames identified in the album include Hill Foster McNeil Gardner Potter Bryer Gould Pierce Page Oust Le Blanc Ryan McKenzie Holden Oberwetter Russell Hutchens Eldred Dunbar King Brown Scholler Holaday Radley Hutchens and many others. From the identification inscriptions beneath the photos along with photographers’ imprints many of Hattie’s family and friends were from the Illinois-Nebraska area and California. There are a number of oval portraits of identified individuals both male and female dated 1900. The other nine images in the album are large photos of the Hill Dunbar and Oberwetter ranches in Nebraska and Wyoming circa 1895-1900.The photo with the “Louis Fleckenstein / Los Angeles†blind stamp is of Loraine Stebinger who signed the photo’s mount “Most sincerely Loraine Stebinger Dec. 25 1918.†Removed from the album the photograph of the musician shows her playing the piano and measures 7 x 10 inches on a 10 x 13.5 inch cream colored mount. Fleckenstein 1866-1943 was an internationally known pictorialist photographer before moving to Los Angeles in 1907 to open up a portrait studio. He and a colleague had already organized the Salon Club of America to give support to regional camera clubs interested in pictorial photography where the emphasis was on photography as an art form rather than a documentary tool – aesthetics over reality! In 1914 along with Edward Weston and others Fleckenstein helped found the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles. In 1924 he relocated to Long Beach where he continued his work in photography. His photos are now in most major museum collections of photography.Another unattributed photo of Stebinger has an ink presentation “To my dearly beloved Friend Harriet Goldnamer from Lorraine Stebingerâ€. That presentation photo was key to identifying Hattie Goldnamer as the compiler of all three albums acquired at the same time of which this is one. Of interest is the penciled note on the back that attributes it along with several other shots of Stebinger in the same dress to Fleckenstein. However that has not been verified. V.p. hardcover

Very good. - A lot of 15 original 3-1/8 inch by 5-3/8 inch black & white photographs of Spanish-American War soldiers at a training camp quite possibly in Florida. The images depict uniformed troops lined up for inspection as well groups of soldiers at rest and recreation or performing tasks amongst rows of tents or in the fields. Several images depict small groups or individuals posing for portraits and one of the images depicts a large row of horses likely those of the Rough Riders being tended by soldiers as others perform tasks around the camp. There is but minor soiling to the verso of the photos and the edges are very slightly curled and could easily be pressed down. Very good.</p><p>The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States from April 21 to August 13 1898 following the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. The United States intervened in the Cuban Revolution and the Philippine Revolution the latter leading into the Philippine-American War. The war ended Spanish influence in the Americas Asia and the Pacific. The United States for its part gained sovereignty over Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines.</p><p>The First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry known as the Rough Riders trained at Camp Riverside in San Antonio Texas then moved to Tampa Florida as they awaited embarkment for Cuba.</p> (Possibly Florida), circa 1898.

1880List1314Northern California 1880. 4to one album in burgundy cloth the other oblong brown pebbled cloth. Seventy-one sepia-toned and cyanotype photographs most measuring 6 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Near fine with some light wear to albums photographs very good or better with very good contrast some showing a hint of fading. A very early pair of vernacular photograph albums centering on the experiences of a wealthy family in San Francisco Monterey and the surrounding areas in the late 1880s. The bulk of the images show the family and their unidentified circle in domestic scenes with the vernacular architecture and landscapes of the Bay Area on full display. Other images show landmarks including Golden Gate Park the Francis Scott Key monument various views of the first Hotel del Monte in Monterey which would burn in 1887 dating the photographs to the period prior to the fire. The album also includes photographs of African American families. <br /> <br /> The image quality is generally quite strong and the photographer was either a professional assembling the album which includes many portraits of family and presumed friends for themselves or the work of a highly skilled amateur. The Initials on the front pastedown are “M.J.R.†though this could be a later owner. The albums were from the estate of the muralist Clara Fargo Thomas who was a resident of New York and could possibly have been from one of her family members though we are unable to glean much detail from the contents. The few annotations offer little clues one just reading “5/11/89 - Golden Gate Park†and another identifying a house as 509 Webster St. in San Francisco though the typical Victorian architecture and sloped street of the house suggest it could have just been a photograph of San Francisco’s unique architecture. <br /> <br /> The photographs of the people give insight into the lives of the new wealthy class of San Francisco residents of the late 19th century with others interestingly showing rural scenes and people. The photographer also had an eye for the flora of the region which is displayed throughout. It is unclear what the relationship of the African-American subjects was to the photographer and why they appear in the album. Overall a compelling group of images and the earliest example of vernacular photograph albums of California images we can find in the trade. unknown

1870List1434New Orleans: Various Photographers 1870. Twenty-four cartes-de-Visite and three ninth-plate tintypes all bearing New Orleans photographers’ marks to versos. Very good to fine. Very Good. A curated group of images of New Orleans subjects with an emphasis on women children and religious imagery including one uncommon image of a rosary and another of the interior of a church. Most photographs document the city’s wealthy residents at a time when elite culture changed due to the abolition of French instruction in schools and the general forces of reconstruction. The images include several with identified subjects. Overall an evocative group worthy of study by scholars of the city. Various Photographers unknown
1890List1326Costa Rica 1890. Albumen photographs 9 x 7 ½ inches on larger mounts with credits to Rudd y Paynter and the Paynter Bros. Near Fine. H.N. Rudd and the Paynter Brothers Richard and John were photographers who were active in Costa Rica in the 1890s operating out of San Jose. Five of these views show the Rudd y Paynter mark on versos with their address at the Parque Central in San Jose. The Paynters were from the United States arriving in 1874 and first establishing Rudd y Paynter out of a shop in the Parque Central where they also sold marble and art objects. In 1895 the studio changed its name to Paynter Bros. <br /> <br /> Collected here are nine scarce albumen views of Costa Rica from the 1890s. Five of them document a trip up Mt. Turrialba these bear the Rudd y Paynter mark. Of the other other four one image shows a building likely in San Jose with a gathered crowd; one shows a very striking mural and is captured “Corpus Christi / Cartaga Costa Rica June 4 / 96 this shows no photographers mars though the size and format are identical to the others and we presume the photographers to be the Paynter brothers; One shows industrial coffee machinery on “El Canada†the last shows a group of people in front of the bridge over the Rio Grande with a platform showing the markings of the Hamlin Car and Wheel Company of Catwissa PA. The group with the exception of the Corpus Christi image are mounted on uniform heavy cardstock mounts with gilt edges and remain in particularly fine condition with excellent contrast and some light wear to mounts. Overall a scarce group documenting Costa Rica at a time when few photographers operated. unknown

From wikipedia: "Adelaide Sophia Claxton 10 May 1841 – 29 August 19271 was a British painter illustrator and inventor. She was one of the first women artists to make a major part of her living through the commercial press selling satirical and comic illustrations to more than half a dozen periodicals." <br> <br>This Claxton book is subtitled Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. Claxton did mostly illustrations for periodicals - she only produced two books which are quite rare. This book is filled with her often comic illustrations. <br> <br>Is this a first edition The second author Ross has a preface dated 1875. That is the only date in the book. With a lot of searching of the internet we found an image of a different title page - the different one is in color and lacks the subtitle Several Hundreds of Num-nums and Nicy-nicies. The color title page looks like it might be from a soft cover edition but that is not clear. <br><br>The book is half leather on brown cloth. The spine has five hubs and a label. Corners and extremities are quite worn but the binding is very solid. Full refund if not satisfied. Judy" Office hardcover

The sheet possibly taken from and album but there are no signs of that measures 9 x 11 1/4 inches and it bears three small photographs: George King of the Greeks; Olga Queen of the Greeks and Athens Surrounding these photographs someone has penned in a very neat hand a fair copy of John Milton's poem Athens. A very attractive presentation.The byzantine ways of Europe's royalty never ceases to amaze. "Born a Danish Prince in Copenhagen’s royal Yellow Palace King George I of the Hellenes 1845-1913 was seventeen when he was elected to establish a new dynasty of kings by the Greek National Assembly who had deposed Bavarian-born King Otto and the unpopular Queen Amalia in 1862. King George had the distinction of taking the Greek throne before his father who was to become King Christian IX of Denmark. His nomination was supported by the Great Powers of Russia France and Great Britain. The Greek government held a plebiscite and the British Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh was awarded 95% of the vote but his mother Queen Victoria was adamant that the Prince would not leave England so Prince George took the prize.When King George I sailed into Athens in 1863 he said ‘my strength is in the love of my people’. In his accession speech the King declared ‘in these modern days Princes must strive to be superior in intellect knowledge and goodness to those around them’. A born democrat King George supported the constitutional monarchy and swiftly mastered Greek as well as national sports such as wrestling and running. He established the modern Olympic Games in Athens and opened the summer games in 1896. His endeavors to endear himself to his people earned him the moniker ‘Father of the Nation’ and King George reigned for almost fifty-years" Henry Poole. This pamphlet has almost 100 handsome b/w photographs of London Ontario. The first full-page photo is a street scene showing a procession of horse drawn carriages during a visit from the Duke and Duchess of York.
