Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius February 22 1705 - September 27 1735 was a Swedish naturalist and is known as the "father of Ichthyology."<br/><br/>Artedi was born in the province of Ã…ngermanland. Intending to become a clergyman he went in 1724 to study theology at Uppsala University but he turned his attention to medicine and natural history especially fishes. In 1728 his countryman Carolus Linnaeus arrived in Uppsala and a lasting friendship was formed between the two. In 1732 both left Uppsala Artedi for England and Linnaeus for Lappland; before parting they reciprocally bequeathed to each other their manuscripts and books in the event of death.<br/><br/>Artedi accidentally drowned at Amsterdam where he was engaged in cataloguing the collections of Albertus Seba a wealthy Dutchman who had formed what was perhaps the richest museum of his time. According to agreement his manuscripts came into the hands of Linnaeus and his Bibliotheca Ichthyologica and Philosophia Ichthyologica together with a life of the author were published at Leiden in 1738.<br/><br/>On his grave an epitaph by George Shaw is engraved:<br/><br/>Here lies poor Artedi in foreign land pyx'd<br/><br/>Not a man nor a fish but something betwixt<br/><br/>Not a man for his life among fishes he past<br/><br/>Not a fish for he perished by water at last. Written by a human surgeon and first published in 1753 this popular work was primarily a compilation of earlier writers. It went into many editions the first edition is extremely rare and the early editions are scarce<br/><br/>This copy has a remarkable provenance connecting it to the immediate family of GILBERT WHITE of Selborne. Benjamin White c.1725-1794 was the younger brother of Gilbert White 1720-1793 author of the celebrated Natural History of Selborne 1789 which Benjamin White in fact published. Benjamin White's shop at Fleet Street and the Strand Horace's Head "became a meeting place for naturalists and as was customary was used as a poste restante in 1775 by Gilbert White's correspondent Thomas Pennant whose books White published and by others. White's range of titles is indicated in his advertisement at the end of J. Ellis and D. C. Solander's Natural History of the Zoophytes 1786 which he published. They included Mark Catesby's Natural History of Carolina in two volumes which perhaps inspired Audubon" DNB.<br/><br/>White's engraved bookplate of South Lambeth is affixed to the front pastedown; along with that of his son JOHN WHITE who assisted Gilbert in the preparation his journals for publication and contributed a Memoir of his famous uncle for the 1802 edition. At his death in 1779 Charles "was considered the most finished fly-fisher of his day." The work went into many editions: this the first is a rare book indeed.<br/>This particular copy has a distinguished provenance. He was among the first to diagnose equine ailments rather than simply treating the symptoms. "No previous writer had drawn attention to the matter while among the general public an entire absence of education was apparently regarded as the first essential of a veterinary practitioner."
