1900158521900. WOMEN IN SPORTS Photographic collection of 18 rare vintage photos celebrating girls and women in sports. Some are identified with names and locations. Locations include New Jersey Canada New York California Massachusetts. Dated approximately 1900-1940. Various sizes; mostly between 8.5" x 11" and 6.5x 8.5" with four smaller photos at 2.25" x 3.5". Black and white silver gelatin photographs. Many pieces show uniformed team photos and action shots documenting girls' increasingly rigorous participation in active sports in the first half of the 20th century. Sports include winter skiing ice skating fencing equestrian and polo bowling swimming track and field rugby. Many of the photos have extended captions on the verso. For example one photo features several Canadian swimmers in uniform in 1930 with the caption: "Swimming champions add to picturesque country at Lake Louise Canada. They are left to right: Agnes Geraghty Olympic swimmer; Catherine Ames Like Lindstrom Metropolitan Distance Champion; Constance Hanf Junior Metropolitan Champion; Eleanor Holm National Champion back stroke 100 and 200 yards; Georgia Colemen National Champion Diver. Miss Coleman is From Los Angeles while the other are members of the Women's Swimming Association New York. Another caption on a photo of several polo players states: "Southern California co-eds to form polo team sorority women at the University of Southern California are preparing to invade one of the few remaining sport sanctuaries of men- polo." Also included is a short of the American Women's Olympic Fencing Team which include: MMarion Lloyd Muriel Guggolz and Dorothy Locke. <br /> <br /> Curated photographic archive celebrating female athletes who overcame stereotypes of women as the "weaker" sex. Because early social constructs regulated physical activity for women few were able to rise up as professional sports competitors until the 20th century. This archive is a testament to these women's historic strides revealing their early physical training their membership in early sport clubs as well as their most daring record-breaking feats. Milnor served for a number of years as secretary of the Schuylkill Fishing Company America's oldest angling group founded in 1732 - indeed it claims to be the world's oldest social organization--and was a member of the Gloucester Fox Hunting Club the first organized hunt club in America founded across the river in New Jersey in 1766. He was also a member of Congress 1812-1820 and in 1829 was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. His well written accounts of both organizations are full of lively anecdotes specific incidents and reports of various methods of hunting and fishing not to mention a number of illustrious and interesting individuals. <br /> These two classic works are usually bound together as is the case here. The collation conforms with the Schwerdt copy; Bruns notes the portrait is not always present. Attractive copy of a rare book. He welcomes her to the family and writes "I think I have never longed so much to meet a person I have never seen." The second letter is to his brother Will William Henry Sage 1844-1924 recalling their great love for each other from boyhood to the present "in spite of our frequent quarrels."<br /> <br /> Dean Sage 1841-1902 is remembered as author of a great late-nineteenth century sporting book The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing 1888 and as one of the great American angling collectors. unknown

The first French edition was published in London in 1799 under the title Choix d' amusements physiques et mathématiques. The work includes tricks with cards magic squares magic lanterns feats of artificial memory and proto-spiritualist conjuring through "palingenesy" by which a performer can make the images of the dead appear in a glass jar plus other optical illusions. A large collection of mathematical and physical curiosities including chapters on arithmetic "To arrange 30 criminals in such a manner as to save 15 of them &c." He was the 1st Scotsman and only the 7th person to reach the peak of Mont Blanc in 1827. That he was a notable artist is proven by his sketches here. The 1828 1st edition was a quarto. " . the author has selected the present size octavo as more convenient than that in which it was originally published. In adapting the lithographic embellishments he has been enabled to improve them; and he has added two maps of extraordinary merit. Several additions have been made to the work -- Preface to the Second Edition." Presentation Copy inscribed by Auldjo to William Forsyth Grant probably Dr. Wm. F. Grant of Jamaica d.1834 which may explain the foxing.
