1915218485東京. Tokyo. Circa1915. Very attractive framed glass-topped wooden board depicting the route of the Tōkaidō Railway between Tokyo and Kobe. A metal ball is guided along the printed course with numerous holes into which the ball may fall before reaching the end of the line. The coloured lithographed surface shows key stations and landmarks along the route. 24.4 x 16.4 x 2.7cm presented in its original quite worn cardboard box with title label 25 x 17 x 3.4cm. Original box present though very worn with washi repairs a prior owner's details inside in the lid of the box. The game itself is in excellent bright condition. A charming early 20th-century Japanese tama korogashi ball-rolling or bagatelle-style game combining amusement with geography. These games were popular in the Taishō and early Shōwa eras and represent a forerunner to later mechanical pinball and educational map games. <br> <br>In this hand-held game the player travels from Tokyo to Kobe on the Tokaido Railway line via a small ball which is contained in the box. It is a game of skill with several traps holes which need to be avoided before reaching to the final destination of Kobe. The railway line this game depicts first opened in 1889 between Shinbashi and Kobe and the line was extended to Tokyo Station in 1914. The line which mainly followed the traditional Tokaido Road became the major transportation line in Japan. . unknown

Major Percy Horace Gordon Powell-Cotton 1866-1940 was an explorer big game hunter naturalist and anthropologist and founder of the Quex Museum Birchington the Powell-Cotton Collection. He spent most of his life exploring and traveling throughout the world as well as undertaking multiple overseas collecting expeditions. In total Powell-Cotton undertook 27 expeditions spanning half a century. Included game pieces featuring colourful characters and an instruction sheet in Danish. 19 by 19 inches fold-up cardboard game board and a colorful pictorially decorated paper-board box containing the Dumbo playing pieces a die and an instruction sheet. One sheet of playing instructions in Danish. The pop up board is in lovely condition some wear to the small box of playing pieces. A WELL-PRESERVED DISNEY GAME and one featuring one of the studio’s most beloved animal characters. Dumbo is of course the baby elephant who could fly. Although the rules are in Danish the game is fairly simple to figure out and appears to be essentially complete. Higinbotham a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory created an oscilloscope-based tennis simulation in 1958 as part of public demonstrations designed to make atomic research accessible and non-threatening during the Cold War. First edition of this excellent early account of hunting on the Kenai Peninsula including descriptions of Alaskan Native Americans salmon cannery operations and more. Radclyffe had acquired a permit from the Bureau of Biological Survey with the USDA in order to collect big game specimens for the British Museum and the account was dedicated to a longtime fellow hunter and friend Theodore Roosevelt. The author details his experiences with hunting Alaskan Brown Bears Grizzly Bears Moose Dall Sheep and running afoul of the zealous US Deputy Marshal Sexton a stickler for the new game regulations instituted on the Kenai in 1903 not to mention destroying the distilling operation of Alaskan hunter & miner Andrew Berg. He managed to survive a charging bear sow after being abandoned by his guide as well as the Alaskan courtroom but his companions were not so lucky as the judge ruled that the permit did not extend to the hunting party. Radclyffe returned later to hunt Alaska on the Kenai in August 1910 employing Andrew Berg as his head guide. First edition of this wonderfully illustrated and charming alphabet game/book featuring anthropomorphic letters in the “Kingdom of the Alphabet†set against the adventures of a Medieval/Renaissance Country of Vowels and the Isle of Consonants uniting over a banquet ball to form an alphabet. Marquet 1892-1984 and Desnoyer 1901-1988 were illustrators and miniaturists noted for their inventive games and illustrations who had originally designed this game/book in 1939. They were married to the well known painters Albert Marquet and Francois Denoyer respectively. Desnoyer a Russian-Ukrainian emigre from Kiev had originally landed in Bohemia by 1906 where she learned the Western alphabet and later settled in France. This particular copy not only features the four colour lithograph boards for children to cut out and play the suggested alphabet game but also the 2 additional boards for an adult word game and back board to create toys which are typically missing as are often the colour-tinted instruction sheets. A charming set of playing cards based on the film Nankyoku Tairiku "The South Pole" recounting the story of the 1956-57 Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition. The cards show scenes of penguins the research ship Soya and the expedition members. In 1955 the Japanese government announced plans to send a research group to Antarctica in the following year. A team of 53 scientists led by Professor Nagata Takeshi set off on 8 November 1956 the first time Japan had explored the south pole since the early 1900s. They set up the Syowa Station on East Ongul Island before being emergency airlifted out of a storm. A documentary film focusing on the expedition was released in June 1957 directed by Hayashida Shigeo and titled Nihon nankyoku chiiki kansokutai no kiroku: Nankyoku Tairiku. This game was released to complement the film. Karuta is a traditional Japanese matching game where each pictorial card is assigned a letter of the Japanese alphabet and must be paired with an associated poem sentence or proverb. The player who can make the most matches wins. 90 playing cards 61 x 81 mm landscape or portrait 45 with colour photographic illustrations on one side 45 lettered in black on one side. Housed in original pictorial box 170 x 132 x 35 mm lettered in red and black. Lacking instructional booklet. Cards a little toned and bowed; box scuffed with minor loss in places bottom with some damp-staining remains of plastic wrap on lid verso old repairs in places: a very good example. "It is proposed that a COMPLETE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS be opened to the public on a fifty cent admission basis which is to be properly laid out as an attractive Zoological and Botanical Garden with the finest and largest private collection of animals birds and reptiles to be seen anywhere on the continent."<br /> <br /> The advent of the motion picture industry in California had many wide-ranging ramifications on the business world and one was that it created a new market for firms who traditionally supplied animals to circuses and zoos both public and private owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst. <br /> <br /> This archive is a report by the Investment Auditors of California for the Horne Corporation that was looking to expand by establishing a zoological garden in the environs of Los Angeles. The Horne Corporation was the largest and most successful of its type at the time apparently the only company in the US that could completely outfit a circus with both animals and show equipment. They were to purchase the Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio for $250000 and thereby sought to provide a similarly complete service to the film studios with both animals and suitable locations for film sets.<br /> <br /> The head of the company I.S. Horne for whom this report was compiled commenced trading in animals from Kansas City MO around 1914. The range of animals at the their disposal included big game birds reptiles and many of the documents concern the prospect of importing reindeer from Alaska.<br /> <br /> The material is held in a presentation album and includes the certificate of incorporation in Wilmington Delaware May 13 1929 as well as the by-laws of the corporation minutes of the first meeting the proposal for Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio and a balance sheet. At this stage the company had total assets of $57700 & liabilities of $625388.46; an enumeration of the various animals in inventory including wildebeest sables leopard lynx Rhodesian baboons bushbaby and a large aardvark.<br /> <br /> Of real interest are the plans for the park including artist's impressions which would be furnished with circus attractions "Monkey Island" jungle setting for motion pictures and an acknowledgment that "before the introduction of the motion picture industry the art of showmanship was not quite so highly developed as it is today." In fact one of the first pictures they supplied animals for was - appropriately enough - Trader Horn which was nominated for the 1931 Academy Award for Best Picture. <br /> <br /> On a more practical level there is a "Descriptive Classification of Principal Commercial Wild Animals" which lists 340 different animals in some details. There is also an account of hunting wild animals in East Africa as well as a section on animals that have been trained to hunt by man. Furthermore there is also much correspondence which provides much insight into the game industry its clients and the prospects for its future.<br /> <br /> Horne's venture subsequently became known as the World Jungle Compound in Thousand Oaks California eventually being acquired by 20th Century Fox studios. This archive is a record of a new phase of the entertainment industry. unknown
