195760736Tulare CA 1957. 12mo. 2 volumes: 16 368 32; 16 368 32 pp. with entries on 306 pages of the 1955 diary and 260 pages of the one for 1957 a total of approximately 7500 words unused pages were generally marked "vacation" or "day off"; expenses were noted on the daily entry pages rather than in the separate "accounts" section at the rear; laid into the 1955 diary are three photographs from an arrest. Many of the daily entries are simple statements of areas patrolled but many also report hunting and fishing prospects in the area e.g. "The few anglers that were willing to work for their trout were successful in catching limits in Bear Creek upstream from the Mtn. Home Road. A few newly hatched quail were observed in Yokohl Valley near Milton Fire Station" "Checked 35-40 hunters & no deer" "200 pheasants were released on the Tipton open pheasant area after shooting hours on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 76 46 males and 30 females of the leg bands were recovered from hunters mostly on the morning of the 22nd. There were about 200 hunters in the area" hunting violations including illegal clam digging at Pismo Beach arrests general observations on the wildlife in the area meetings with other wardens and fish and game officials training etc. An excellent representation of the daily activities of a game warden in Tulare California and its surroundings in the mid-1950s. Oblong 4to photograph album 7 x 10 inches "Photographs" gilt-stamped on upper board all of the photographs captioned in white ink on the album leaves below the images the captions have been taken from identical notes on the verso of each of the photographs. Almost all of the photographs were taken in the Cascade Mountains in Washington and Oregon; two picturing the elk were taken in Montana and another was taken in northern California. An excellent photograph album built around the hunting trips of Spokane Washington businessman Percy Powell from his teenage years to adulthood; Powell was general manager of the Powell-Sanders Wholesale Grocers in Spokane Washington from the late 1910s. The photos are affixed to the album leaves by two corners one is badly worn several others are a little chipped or creased the images mostly dark and sharp. Four different examples of this publication from Rowland Ward two with the title above one from 1904 with the caption title "Stuffed Animals: Museum Specimens All Mounted in Standing Positions" and one from 1912 with the caption title "Price List of Mounted Specimens for Museums". 4to. The lists vary from three to ten pages rectos only two include a full page illustration of a stuffed elephant one torn three include a Rowland Ward decorated cover sheet. Animals from Africa predominate but there are also specimens from India Asia Europe North and South America and Australia; prices seem to top out at $500 for an African elephant typically an entry would include common name of the animal its genus and species its sex country of origin and price. Apparently none of these lists are located on OCLC. Folded for mailing one with a receipt stamp two with ink docketing. Very good lot of scarce Rowland Ward ephemera. "It is proposed that a COMPLETE ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS be opened to the public on a fifty cent admission basis which is to be properly laid out as an attractive Zoological and Botanical Garden with the finest and largest private collection of animals birds and reptiles to be seen anywhere on the continent."<br/><br/>The advent of the motion picture industry in California had many wide-ranging ramifications on the business world and one was that it created a new market for firms who traditionally supplied animals to circuses and zoos both public and private owned by the likes of William Randolph Hearst. <br/><br/>This archive is a report by the Investment Auditors of California for the Horne Corporation that was looking to expand by establishing a zoological garden in the environs of Los Angeles. The Horne Corporation was the largest and most successful of its type at the time apparently the only company in the US that could completely outfit a circus with both animals and show equipment. They were to purchase the Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio for $250000 and thereby sought to provide a similarly complete service to the film studios with both animals and suitable locations for film sets.<br/><br/>The head of the company I.S. Horne for whom this report was compiled commenced trading in animals from Kansas City MO around 1914. The range of animals at the their disposal included big game birds reptiles and many of the documents concern the prospect of importing reindeer from Alaska.<br/><br/>The material is held in a presentation album and includes the certificate of incorporation in Wilmington Delaware May 13 1929 as well as the by-laws of the corporation minutes of the first meeting the proposal for Los Angeles Zoological Garden and Jungle Studio and a balance sheet. At this stage the company had total assets of $57700 & liabilities of $625388.46; an enumeration of the various animals in inventory including wildebeest sables leopard lynx Rhodesian baboons bushbaby and a large aardvark.<br/><br/>Of real interest are the plans for the park including artist's impressions which would be furnished with circus attractions "Monkey Island" jungle setting for motion pictures and an acknowledgment that "before the introduction of the motion picture industry the art of showmanship was not quite so highly developed as it is today." In fact one of the first pictures they supplied animals for was - appropriately enough - Trader Horn which was nominated for the 1931 Academy Award for Best Picture. <br/><br/>On a more practical level there is a "Descriptive Classification of Principal Commercial Wild Animals" which lists 340 different animals in some details. There is also an account of hunting wild animals in East Africa as well as a section on animals that have been trained to hunt by man. Furthermore there is also much correspondence which provides much insight into the game industry its clients and the prospects for its future.<br/><br/>Horne's venture subsequently became known as the World Jungle Compound in Thousand Oaks California eventually being acquired by 20th Century Fox studios. This archive is a record of a new phase of the entertainment industry. unknown books
