The Dust Jacket is bright with just a little rubbing at the edges. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with 24 pages of photos. When Alice Coachman won the high jump in the 1948 Games she became the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. Many experts think she would earned several additional Olympic medals if the 1940 and 1944 Games had not been cancelled due to WWII. While in high school she won the AAU nationals in the high jump and 50-meter dash. In college she dominated track and field collecting a host of national titles -- championships in the 50-meter dash the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter relay. Her ten consecutive AAU titles in the high jump 1938 - 1948 are still a record. Coachman also won three championships as a star player for the Tuskegee women's basketball team. She was named to five All-American teams. At the 1996 Atlanta Games she was honored as one of the 100 greatest athletes in Olympic history. Appendices list her many championships the nine Sports Halls of Fame to which she belongs since increased to 10 and many other honors and tributes. Bibliographical references. Scorecard filled out else clean internally. <br /> <br /> Nicely preserved copy of this program from Bill Russell's historic final season at the University of San Francisco under coach Phil Woolpert. USF won the championship that year then Russell went on to lead the U.S. men's Olympic team to gold in Melbourne and then won a championship with the Celtics their first during his rookie season. A portrait of the Waseda University basketball team from 1927; according to its manuscript caption the photo was taken following their defeat by the University of California team at the Oakland Auditorium on a tour of the Pacific coast. This poster signed by several members of the 1992 team which won the Bronze medal after a shocking upset by the CIS team in the semifinals. C. Carlson" on free endpaper. Carlson was an amazing individual who practiced medicine while coaching the Pitt Panthers basketball team for thirty years while essentially winning the national college championship in at least two seasons. This book came out the same year the Panthers were undefeated. Carlson innovated the Figure 8 offense and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame and the Helms Foundation Basketball Hall of Fame. A portrait of a young man in uniform posed with older adults in front of a fence suggests familial connections to military service. Additional photographs document everyday life and leisure including fishing scenes early automobiles such as Model T vehicles a woman cycling a child playing violin and a woman in a canoe. 194119551AB1941. University City 1941. 29 : 195 cm. 1 leaf text 1 leaf illustrations. Alvie E. Sanberg of University City Missouri invented a number of different goal improvements. On February 24 1936 he filed both a design patent application and a utility patent application for his new "Baketball Goal"; the two patents were issued a week apart in September of that same year. Prior to his invention nets had to be tied or lanced on to the hoop. But thanks to Sandberg all one neeeds to do is take loops from the net and hook them over the connectors circling the ring. This method is so effective that we could not think today of attaching the net any other mode. - See "Smithonian - The patent behind Basketball". unknown
