Original 7-Page Typed Journal of a Trip from New York to California and Back in 1936.

193674698N.p.: N.p. 1936. A very interesting record of a cross-country automobile trip in 1936. Original typed document of 7 pages mounted on six sheets of a heavier stock. The journal pages are in fine condition but the backing paper has some edge chipping.In 1936 this was a formidable excursion; unreliable cars bad roads xenophobia and many other hazards presented themselves to the driver on this voyage. The party consisted of five travelers; Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Deyo and their daughter Eleanor and the Rev. and Mrs. George D. Wood. It must have been a commodious vehicle. We never learn which of these people wrote this diary but we do know it was one of the men as their are frequent quips such as "The women went swimming." They all took turns driving. They left Napanoch NY on July 27th and right from the very start they had problems; in Napanoch they had to get a push from a good Samaritan. On the 3rd day they were in Ohio and the writer comments on seeing signs "Communism Will Not be Tolerated" and "Ku Klux Klan Rides Again." Car trouble again on that day. In Kansas he notes that locusts have completely stripped the fields. By the seventh day they were in New Mexico where they visited Las Animas and stayed in an adobe cottage in Taos. On the ninth day they visited cliff dwellings in Arizona and the Grand Canyon where two of the party descended into the canyon on horseback. Finally by the twelfth day they were in Barstow California. He notes in pencil that they had driven 3445 miles in 12 1/2 days. A voyage made excessively long by frequent car problems. They spent the next 12 days in the Southern California area visiting friends and fishing. They even went down to Tiajuana and Agua Caliente. Surprisingly they did not visit San Francisco or Yosemite. They started their return trip on 8/27 from San Bernardino. They went through Bryce Canyon and Salt Lake City. Wyoming Nebraska Illinois Ohio and finally home. For each day the author notes the mileage sights seen restaurants and accommodations.They visited numerous reservations along the way likely to check on their co-religionists. They also must have been somewhat young as they often stayed at AAA campgrounds. The AAA is frequently mentioned; repair shops campgrounds hotels restaurants. The frequency of car problems is astounding. On a separate smaller sheet the writer listed all their expenses for the trip and other statistics. For example; the car got 16.8 miles to the gallon and the average cost of gas was 20.7 cents per gallon N.p. unknown

Scrapbook of an African-American Family’s 1947 Road Trip from New York Through Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula

Eleven double-sided scrapbook pages measuring 7 x 11 inches containing forty-five 2 ½ x 3 ½ inch photographs six postcards four maps four guides and nine typed pages. Scrapbook pages fragile with significant marginal damage; scrapbook contents generally excellent. A scrapbook documenting an African-American family’s road trip during July and August of 1947 which took them from Dutchess County New York through Quebec and New Brunswick and then Maine and Cape Cod. The scrapbook contains photographs of the family and scenery on the trip starting at Norrie State Park in Dutchess County then Quebec Gaspé Moncton’s Magnetic Hill in New Brunswick down the coast of Maine and finally a friend’s house in Marstons Mills on Cape Cod. It also includes postcards from various locations; maps of New York Quebec Canada’s Maritimes and Eastern Quebec and New England; tourist guides to Quebec Gaspé Moncton and the Cape; several retyped articles from the Toronto Globe and Mail; and a list of hotels in the Gaspé.<br /> <br /> For an African-American family traveling during the Jim Crow era this trip would have taken significant planning. Canada was not exempt from anti-Black discrimination at both legal and social levels; the car had solved the problem of segregated inferior public transportation but not the problem of finding a restaurant or hotel along one’s route that would actually serve Black patrons or even a safe place to stop and use the restroom. Victor Hugo Green’s Negro Motorist Green Book—a guidebook for food lodging and services that were friendly to African-Americans—did not include Canada until its 1949 edition. The family likely used it for the US leg of their trip but would have had to rely on other tactics for the Canadian leg. unknown
