With a frontispiece various photographs and reproductions and an appendix of Hampshire records 1895-1956. A little discolouration to the backstrip ends and some light top- and fore edge spotting. A very good copy in sometime supplied non-price-clipped dust wrapper lightly dust soiled in places and with just a little edgewear and one short closed tear. This copy has been signed on the front free endpaper by fifteen members of the 1961 Australian touring team including Richie Benaud Neil Harvey Bill Lawry and Ian Quick; and signed on the half-title by twelve members of the 1961 Championship winning Hampshire side their first ever title. Illustration by Taylor 1862 - 1925 the English artist specializing in portrait and genre painting. Taylor was also an avid cricketer and made a set of 12 watercolors of famous cricket players. Colour-decorated wrappers lightly rubbed and a little marked; minor signs of age and use including two light stains to one page; a very good copy. Price List Number 326 of an unspecified upper limit. Loosely inserted is a processed circular letter on the company's letterhead 2 leaves rectos only folded for posting the leading edges now creased with a few tiny sealed tears. The letter dated 1 April 1937 outlines the trade terms prefaced with the following paragraph: 'It is regretted that owing to the tremendous increase in the price of metals and other materials together with increased production costs we have been forced to reduce the Discounts applicable to our List'. The letter addressed to L. Cann proprietor of the eponymous hardware store on The Parade at Norwood in suburban Adelaide is signed by 'J.M. Gregory' - none other than Jack Morrison Gregory 1895-1973 the famous Australian Test cricketer. <p>During the First World War he 'had two tours of duty in France. In 1919 he joined the A.I.F. cricket team in England. Under the leadership of H.L. Collins Gregory developed into an all-rounder whose spectacular hitting was matched by fearsome fast bowling and prehensile slip fielding. <p>Discharged from the A.I.F. in March 1920 Gregory played a leading part next summer in the recovery of the Ashes from England with 442 runs at 73 in the five matches including a century at Melbourne 23 wickets at 24 and 15 catches. <p>In December 1928 he broke down with a knee injury in the first Test against England and retired. In 24 Test matches he had taken 85 wickets at 31 made 1146 runs at just under 37 and taken 37 catches. In first-class cricket his figures were 504 wickets at 21 and 5661 runs at 36. <p>He had joined Kavanagh & English Pty Ltd sheet metal manufacturers in the mid-1920s and was a director by 1928' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. 2 items. He also represented England in 61 Test matches 1908 - 1930 and is thought to be the greatest opening batsman in cricket history. <br /> <br /> This portrait has always been one of the hardest Vanity Fair plates to find and my favorite line in the bio. "Is a keen collector of Ashes" <br /> <br /> Vanity Fair was an English magazine that published satirical caricatures from 1868–1914. These handsome chromolithographs are prized for their portraits of important scientists sportsmen judges & politicians. With page of descriptive text. Approximately 8 x 14" matted in gray.
