Unusual broadside souvenir printed by a Guatemalan hospital thanking three bullfighters for fundraising efforts on their behalf. The Hospital General San Juan de Dios de Guatemala was founded in 1667. In the 1880s it undertook to restore and maintain the colonial-era Plaza de Toros the local bullfighting ring which was a popular spot for the local corridas and other forms of entertainment. The hospital would then receive the income from the bullfights and other festivities. Herein three picadores are individually thanked for participation in what we suspect was a Corrida de Beneficencia in early 1888. This handsome piece utilizes numerous typefaces and is printed in gold. unknown

Muestra todos los fases importantes de una corrida. Con la musica 'Pan y toros' una Zarzuela en tres actos tambien preciosamente ilustrado de Perea. Las cuatro paginas que contienen litografiada la letra y música notada de "Marcha de la Manoleria" están decoradas con 23 viñetas del artista Daniel Perea en color alusivas al texto que compuso Francisco Asenjo Barbieri 1823-1894 - Un clásico de la bibliografÃa taurina. Raro apreciado y buscado Ãlbum Taurino por la belleza de sus acuarelas. Además de las 28 acuarelas contiene la música de la Zarzuela Pan y Toros de Barbieri en 4 páginas con figuras y motivos alegóricos en color en los márgenes. - Extremely scarce bullfighting album! With 28 colour aquarelle plates each 14 by 10 inches with captioned tissue guards. Plus four pages of music featuring colour illustration decoration. Text of captions in three languages: English French and Spanish. Fine. Pristine inside. Slight looseness to front hinge. Francisco Toro actual Gobernador de este Estado y el Ciudadano Juan de Dios Cosgaya su Antecesor.</strong></p><p>Mérida de Yucatán Imprenta del Gobierno de la Propiedad de L. Segú 1834.</p><p>8°. 2 21 1 blank pp. Wit a woodcut illustrated title and two woodcut text illustrations.</p><p>Modern blue calf with gold-tooled title on front cover new endpapers.</p><p>Unrecorded first and only edition of a politically sensitive work by the current Governor of the State of Yucatan General Francisco de Paula Toro. He publishes here his correspondence from April 22 to May 31 1834 with the previous Governor "citizen" Juan de Dios Cosgaya who was removed from his post and imprisoned in the same year as this publication. Toro took over from Cosgaya with the backing of the new President Antonio López de Santa Anna who was also his brother-in-law. In a 2-page instruction Toro addresses the people of Yucatan.<br />The relation between Yucatan and the centralist regime in Mexico had always been problematic. In the first years of Mexican independence the relations were driven from tension to tension due to the different interpretation that both parties had of federalism or seen from another angle of centralism. The vision of the Yucatecans was that they had been incorporated into the Mexican nation as a federated republic with clear rights of autonomy and self-determination. This vision did not reconcile on various occasions throughout the 1830's. Toro was a centralist and placed in Yucatan to fight the federalists but he lasted only a few months because his mandate was declared unconstitutional. However he became Governor again from 1835 to 1837 and moved his seat from Mérida to Campeche.<br />The first books were printed in Merida de Yucatan around 1815 and printer L. Original boards front cover lettered and ornamented in blue and red twelve chromolithographic concertina-style folded panels folding out to 230 cm total length; boards a little spotted and rubbed lower panel with contemporary inscriptions a few lithographs with tiny marginal abrasures; a very good copy of an ephemeral publication.The torero in action shares the facial features with Basque-born Jose Luis Mazzantini y Eguia 1856-1926 Cuba's most famous and last bull fighter before the US-American invaders outlawed bullfights on the island in 1899. Cuba is the first place in Latin America with documented Spanish-style bullfights; as early as 1514. Mazzantini and Sarah Bernard had a love affair during one of the torero's Cuban tours.Provenance: Ownership inscription by one Ernesto Hons with the date 1895 on lower panel.OCLC locates four copies at Princeton UCLA University of Miami and in the Library of Congress. hardcover
