A story of a Choctow Indian household. The author agreed to publish this story and donate the proceeds to help pay for a stained glass windown in the Coatesville PA Presbyterian Church. 185554428Montgomery AL: Office of the Southern Military Academy Lottery 1855. Broadsheet 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches on blue paper the letter on recto printed in italic and signed in type "Sam'l Swan Manager" the scheme on verso announcing 1000 prizes including a top prize of $20000 the scheme printed in a variety of sizes and styles of type. Accompanied by a ticket for the lottery 2 5/8 x 6 7/8 inches printed in black and shades of green small chip in top edge other edgewear for the 8 November 1855 drawing advertised on the broadsheet title across the center "Lottery in Aid of the Southern Military Academy." Also accompanied by a 1939 letter from an owner of the ticket to Alabama collector Peter Brannom in whose collection it wound up informing him of its existence. All folded as for mailing but a very good lot of three items. Founded in 1851 the Southern Military Academy operated in Fredonia Chambers County Alabama until "closed by the civil strife of the 1860s." By special act of the Alabama legislature a bill was passed in 1854 providing for a lottery to be held to raise funds for the school. It was a rousing success as all of the tickets were sold and $60000 in prize money was distributed leaving $25000 for the school. First edition. Well documented exhibition catalogue containing paintings mostly by 17th and 18th painters with some examples from contemporary painters working in the classical style. The descriptions are detailed in a manner that distinguishes this publication from others of the period as it contains both biographical information on the artist was well as a critique of the style composition and color of the work of art. This is an early example of America's entry into the international art market and the beginnings of the establishment of an "American taste" for paintings and objects of art. 670. Noticia summaria do gentilismo da Asia pp. 61-126 A short account of paganism in Asia; These have been attributed by Francisco Maria Esteves Pereria to Fernão de Queiroz a 17th c. Jesuit whose translation of the Bhagavat-Gita was only first published in 1922 and may have been the first translation into a western language of that work. Esteves Pereria considered it a sequel to the two pieces contained in this volume see Ethel Pope: India in Portuguese Literature Bastorá: Tipografia Rangel 1937; pp. 166-168. 3. Joseph de Anchieta. Epistola quamplurimarum rerum naturalium quae S. Vincentii nunc S. Paulà provinciam incolunt sistens descriptionem pp. 127-178 Communication of the very many natural things which dwell in the province of St. Vincent now São Paulo systematically described. The Spanish Jesuit missionary José de Anchieta 1534 -1597 was one of the founders of São Paulo 1554 and Rio de Janeiro a decade later. Best known for his book "The Art of Grammar" on the indigenous Old Tupi language he was also an accomplished naturalist as revealed in this work. Several American artists are listed in the catalogue Sonntag and Leutze being among them. Very fragile. It is possible that this catalogue is a complement to the regular exhibition at the Gallery of American works the same year or the same season with those items being numbered #1 - #145. Early ink ownership and a personal stamp of Dr. J. P. Hiester near the top-edge of both title-pages. Title-pages show moderate foxing; but the text leaves are mostly clean showing only occasional light foxing in margins. Bindings are very edgeworn and scuffed at surfaces with shallow loss at heel and crown; joints are tender with one starting. This is a nicely printed edition in very good condition. unknown books

Among the paintings hanging in the gallery are several by Thomas Birch including one titled "View of Market Street Bridge." Birch along with his father was responsible for the first American color plate book The City of Philadelphia fifteen years earlier. Birch also curated this exhibition according to the list of officers printed at the beginning of the text. There was also a statue of Washington carved in wood by William Rush and portraits by Sully and Stuart.
