1909z07393Paris: Imprimerie Berthaud Frères 1909. First edition. Hardcover. Good . First edition 1909. Quarto. 2906 pp. plus 33 plates. In French. Portfolio original cloth-backed printed paper over boards printed spine label in original red slipcase. Ex-lib. with stamped institutional label on front pastedown. Ownership stamp of Arnold Bank and pencil annotations on front pastedown. Slipcase worn and separated with loss. Some toning and minor staining to boards title page toned. Plates clean. Good plus. Reproductions of the illuminated manuscript paintings and initials of the Psalter of Pope Paul III evidently by Vincent Raymond. Raymond who was active during the mid 16th century was named by Paul III the official Illuminator to the Papal Court - he is the only person known to have held this position. While the manuscript reproduced here is signed only by the copyist Fredrico Mario de Pérouse the author of the essay preceding the plates makes a strong argument for Raymond's responsibility for the paintings.
