1899BIBLIO-30956Trustees of the British Museum London first edition 1899. 5 parts bound in 1 volume half-leather and boards gilt spine-titles portfolio style flaps at front folio 45 cm. 150 facsimile plates with accompanying text. Originally published in five yearly issues of thirty facsimiles 1895-1899. Each of the 150 full page reproductions of autograph manuscripts is briefly described and identified with the collection and callnumber for it and a full transcription provided. The facsimile plates are attractively printed on sepia backgrounds. The plates are divided into two classes: 1 those of historical interest comprising "eighty-five letters and documents written or in a few cases merely signed by English kings and queens statesmen soldiers and sailors ecclesiastics and celebrities in general from Henry V. down to about 1900. For a supplement similar autographs are given of six of the greatest of continental monarchs namely the Emperor Charles V. Philip II of Spain Henry IV and Louis XIV of France Frederic the Great and Napoleon Bonaparte" ; and 2 autographs of "English poets and prose writers philosophers and others" comprising 53 examples from Spenser to Tennyson supplemented by six foreign specimens: Michael Angelo; Albert Durer Erasmus; Luther; Voltaire and Rousseau. Each plate is preceded by a textual commentary and often transcription. Contemporary tree calf leather lettering-piece on spine gilt-rolled fore-edges spine-bands folio 44 cm. xv 1 618 75 pp. Approximately 26000 entries. The latest printed catalogue of the manuscript and book collection of Sir Robert Cotton 1571-1631: Samuel Pepys called this library "one of the jewels of the Crown of England" it has recently been described as "arguably the most important collection of manuscripts ever assembled in Britain by a private individual" C.J. Wright and it was one of the three founding collections of the British Museum. Among the treasures accumulated by Cotton were: the Lindisfarne Gospels two examples of Magna Carta Beowulf the Old English Martyrology Asser's Life of King Alfred multiple versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede's Ecclesiastical History the ninth-century Utrecht Psalter the sole copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and a fifth-century Greek Genesis that had once belonged to Origen and critically important state papers from the Tudor and Stuart periods. From the preface: "The interest arising from the examination of autographic writings of distinguished persons is always greatly increased when the specimen under observation relates to some important and well-known event in the life of the writer. To obtain specimens of this description the author of the present work has given the greatest attention and whenever it was in his power he has chosen a letter or document bearing some striking illustration of the character calling or principal work of the writer.The specimens given in this work have been chiefly selected from manuscripts in the the National Collection. The only one dated belonged to Edith Lane Stow on the Wold and is dated Jan. 21st 1885 the other two have owner names John F Sutton of Selby College Birmingham and Hugh Williams. A mixture of lessons teacher instruction school management and a few mss hymns by Edith and George Lane in 3 text books measuring between 9 and 8.2 x 7.3 and 6.5 inches. Large folio First Edition some moderate age-staining a handful of leaves expertly remargined; strongly bound in early twentieth-century terracotta buckram gilt back uncut a very good bright clean crisp copy. Sold from an institution with its bookplate on front paste-down and small neat stamp on title verso. The Lansdowne MSS are a significant named collection forming part of the holdings of the British Library. They include State papers and correspondence of Lord Burghley Papers of Sir Julius Caesar Papers of Dr. White Kennett his manuscripts passed to James West and so to Lansdowne historical papers from the 15th-18th centuries William Petyt's parliamentary papers and papers of legal interest and topographical and heraldic collections of great importance. The MSS were purchased by the british Museum at Sotheby's auction in 1807. The catalogue comprises: Part I: The Burghley Papers; Part II: the remaining papers each part having its own separate index together with a transcript of the Commons Address the Royal Commission with Caley's Order and a detailed contectural Preface by Henry Ellis.
