179927328London: Drawn etch'd & pub.by Dighton Charing Cross April 1799 1799. The earliest recorded portrait of Thomas John Dibdin. NCBEL III 1129-30. One crease; in fine condition. Rare. Hand-colored etching 20.5 x 16.5 cm with the caption "Sans Souci Jun." With the portrait is the manuscript note: "This Portrait of myself / taken in the palmy days of white neckcloths and frills / when I was as you see rather younger than at present is presented / by Thomas Dibdin April 28 1841." Around the image of Dibdin are depictions of his plays and songs. A fine portrait of the actor and writer Thomas John Dibdin 1771-1841 who like the other famous thespian Dibdins was involved in the English theater from an early age. Thomas John was one of three illegitimate children of Charles Dibdin and actress Harriet Pitt and in his early years on stage he used the name "T. Merchant" and his writings were published anonymously a fact that the artist Dighton makes a playful reference to in giving the subject of his portrait the name "Sans Souci Jun." 1791007574London: S. W. Fores 1791. First Edition. 18th Century broadside of song lyrics and hand-colored etching of foxhunting scene. Uncommon in physical form. Dibdin 1745-1814 was a singer-songwriter nearly two centuries prior to the elevation of that combination. There were always composers who publicly performed their own music of course. He was more versatile than that though. He also wrote operas novels and plays. He collaborated with legendary theater manager David Garrick and served for a time as the Music Director at Covent Garden. The "Oddities" for which this song was written was performed in 1789. Visible part of broadside under glass and matting 36 by 24 cm. With wood frame and matting 50 by 36.5 cm. The frame is of a burled cherry we believe the matting green with a thin white beveling and we believe most would find the framing attractive and worth retaining. S. W. Fores unknown

1800131Charles Dibdin 1800. Good. All 5 volumes have been rebound in half leather with purple marbled paper and are housed in a custom slipcase. There is some foxing and stains to the text throughout the volumes and the print quality is fairly poor. Mr. Dibdin was a bit of a musical theater prodigy and polymath who ended up building his own theater to perform in. In addition to multiple songs and plays he also wrote a 4 volume memoir and a couple of 3 volume novels. Unusual to see a complete set in hardcover that is not print on demand.
