Boards have major shelf wear chipping rubbing bumping to corners and some staining from the paper bleeding onto the leather. End papers are marbled. Text blocks have foxing and price stickers on the rear paste down. Volume I's sticker is torn and there's a partially torn sticker on the front paste down. Volume III has an open tear along the edge of the first rear end paper. Text in French. Firmin Didot Paris 1821 32 x 22 cm 3 tomes en 3 Vol. reliés French gallery or collection of portraits of men and women who distinguished France in the 16th 17th and 18th centuries. First edition. A supplement would appear a few years later. The index is lacking in the last volume. Half black sheep with fillets smooth spine. Excellent condition some scattered foxing in the margins but on very white paper. The three volumes contain respectively 65 engravings 60 and 62 engravings. The historical notices opposite each portrait which comprise several pages are the work of Villemain Andrieux Denon Boissy d'Anglas and associates. the portraits by Mr Chrétien Rulhman Weber. Numerous facsimiles add to the interest of the work which contains portraits found nowhere else. This edition is uncommon and justly appreciated by collectors. Firmin Didot unknown

Nepveu Paris 1818-1823 12.5 x 21 cm 4 volumes reliés First collected edition of the works by the author of Les Étourdis ou le Mort supposé a comedy that enjoyed great success just before the Revolution.The set includes a portrait frontispiece in the first volume four engraved plates and ten engraved headpieces.Bound in contemporary full polished and mottled brown calf gilt decoration smooth spines with six false raised bands highlighted with gilt fillets and repeated gilt floral tools gilt fillet frames on covers bordered with a garland roll gilt tooling to head- and tailpieces green morocco spine labels marbled endpapers and pastedowns gilt edges on boards marbled edges contemporary bindings.Some foxing to a few leaves of volume IV and to the endpapers with minor surface abrasions to the covers.Poet and playwright F.-G.-J.-S. Andrieux 17591833 was for a time drawn to politics under the Consulate.He is remembered for his famous retort to Bonaparte who reproached him for his opposition in the Tribunate: « Citoyen Premier Consul on ne s'appuie que sur ce qui résiste ».In literature however his ultra-classical tastes prevented him from recognizing the genius of Balzac of whom he said after hearing Cromwell: « Ce jeune homme doit faire quoi que ce soit excepté de la littérature ». A splendid copy in Bradel-Derome le jeune bindings cf. 181655305Paris: Vente 1816. Fine. Royal wedding edition of this popular pre-Revolution comedy issued on the occasion of the marriage of Princess Marie-Caroline and the Duc de Berry - and from the library of the Duchess herself who famously sold her books after her failed coup in 1832. The Duchess's wedding occurred only a year after the restoration of the royal House of Bourbon in 1815 following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. On that occasion a special performance of Andrieux's 1787 play was performed for the Duchess a devotee of the theater. This rare edition was printed as a memento of that event which was to have massive implications in French history. <br /> <br /> The Duchess's new husband was the king's brother; after the Duc de Berry's assassination in 1820 their son became the heir apparent to the French throne. But when the July Revolution of 1830 deposed the Bourbons the Duchess and her son went into exile. In 1832 however the Duchess of Berry clandestinely returned to France to lead a rebellion becoming "the most wanted woman in France" Samuels. Her coup failed and she was once again exiled; her story would later be dramatized in fiction by Alexandre Dumas as LES LOUVES DE MACHECOUL 1859. <br /> <br /> Realizing she would never return to her beloved library of some 8000 volumes at Chateau Rosny she made the decision to sell it. It was then one of the most famous libraries in France with a tremendous range in philosophy history travel science law theology fiction and theater. This copy's binding and bookplates mark its provenance from the library of the Duchess. It was bound by René Simier 1772-1843 who "had no superior and few rivals during his career" Ramsden 190 with his ticket announcing him as "Binder to the King to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Berry and to His Royal Highness the Duke of Bordeaux." The binding is in the style the Duchess regularly ordered from Simier featuring her gilt arms on the boards upon a carefully selected full morocco. It further bears the engraved bookplate of Rosny on the unusual pink endpapers. Books from the Duchess's library still appear with some regularity on the market today but rarely with such a close personal connection to the Duchess herself. Contemporary full honey morocco boards stamped in gilt with the arms of the Duchess of Berry bound by René Simier with his ticket "Relieur du Roi de S.A.R. Madame Duchesse de Berry et de S.A.R. Mgr le duc de Bordeaux". Pink glazed endpapers all edges gilt. 4 82 pages. Engraved bookplate of the Bibliothèque de Rosny on front pastedown; bookplates also of Alexis Rouart and Eugène Aubry-Vitet. Only trace rubbing and soil. Vente unknown
