The two friends have been raised as brother and sister since birth and grow to fall in love.Illustrated with five plates.By Bernardin de Saint-Pierre a botanist and author who is best known for this novel.Collated complete. Collated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Oxford Libraries. Rebound in patterned paper covered boards with new endpapers. Externally smart with only a few light marks. Very light rubbing to the joints. Spine is a little discoloured. Ribbon marker is present but a little worn. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are age toned with some spots and a tide mark to the textblock including to the plates. Repair to the reverse of the half-title. An incredibly scarce translated title.Paul and Virginia as it appears in this title is a translation from the French 'Paul et Virginie' by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre originally published in 1788.Set on the island of Mauritius under French rule this tale traces the lives of its two protagonists who are childhood friends and then lovers.The work critiques the detrimental affect of the contemporary ways of the French upper classes and comments on the immorality of being cruel to slaves if not of owning them. Rebound in very smart red boards and quarter red morocco with gilt lettering to the spine.This work features a monochrome frontispiece depicting a scene from the tale. Rebound in quarter morocco. A translation of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's best-known novel the love story Paul et Virginie Paris 1788 set in Mauritius made by Helen Maria Williams 1759-1829. It was neither the first nor a complete translation but Williams' English abridgement first published London 1795 was immediately successful and reprinted 10 times within the British Isles before 1801. Whilst the third edition overall it is also the first Dublin edition of this translation. We have not found any other record of the final four pages of publisher's advertisements. The work presents as the preface states "all that portion" of Saint-Pierre's Studies of Nature "which relates immediately to the subject of religion." <br /> Bristol B10094.
