Contemporary with its New York publication on triple-column pages 395-7 10 November issue appears a significant selection from Melville's REDBURN and on triple column pages 418-20 17 November issue appears a lengthy review made up largely of excerpts from the text. Duyckinck and his brother George were influential tastemakers in the mid-19th century world of writing and publishing in the U. S. and Evert and Melville were close friends. In these pages Melville is christened the "De Foe sic of the Ocean." Secretary of State Edward Everett writes to Secretary of the Navy John Pendleton Kennedy on Justice Lemuel Shaw's behalf to recommend his son John Oakes Shaw for a position in the Navy. Oakes Shaw as he was known was the eldest son from his father's second marriage to Hope Savage. He became the brother-in-law of Herman Meville when the author married Justice Shaw's daughter Elizabeth from his first marriage. In fact Oakes had truly disgraced his family when in 1844 he married an "inopportunely preganant Caroline Caro Sarah Cobb."<br/>Reading in full "Mr. John O. Shaw of Boston a son of Chief Justice Lemuel Shaw of Massachusetts is desirous of being appointed a pursor in the Navy. His father equally respectable as a Magistrate & a citizen desires me to speak a good word for him. I have no knowledge of the young man but I am sure the Chief Justice would not recommend him if he did not think him fully qualified for the place". BAL 13658 First American edition.<br /><br /><i>Mardi</i> the Polynesian word meaning "the world" is Melville's first pure fiction work while featuring fictional narrators his previous novels were heavily autobiographical. It details much like <i>Typee</i> and <i>Omoo</i> the travelings of an American sailor who abandons his whaling vessel to explore the South Pacific. Unlike the first two however <i>Mardi </i>is highly philosophical and said to be the first work to show Melville's true potential. The tale begins as a simple narrative but quickly focuses upon discourse between the main characters and their interactions with the different symbolic countries they encounter. While not as cohesive or lengthy as <i>Moby-Dick</i> it shares a similar writing style as well as many of the same themes.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Plumb coloring has faded and spine sunned with gilt dulled some foxing through out corners bumped with some light rubbing previous owner's name in pencil on title else about very good in a fine slipcase. The first appearance of this novella about a revolt on a Spanish slave ship captained by Don Benito Cereno appearing in the magazine in three installments on pages 353-367 459-471 and 633-644. Acknowledged as one of Melville's greatest achievements it was included with some revisions in his short story collection "The Piazza Tales" published May 1856. Very Good indeed bound in contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards five raised bands with dark brown calf volume label in gilt title label missing marbled end papers and edges. The complete six monthly magazines with title pages well bound and lacking only the original wrappers. Moderate toning to end papers only interior pages clean and with no foxing or toning. Quite uncommon especially so in collectible condition. Basis for the 1969 French film of the same title winner of a Gold Medal at the 1969 Venice International Film Festival and the NET Playhouse television episode in 1967.
