The author was Assistant Chief Constable later Chief Constable of the Metropolitan Police during the later stages of the investigation into the Whitechapel Murders. In the present work he suggests that the knew the final identity of the killer without providing a name. This copy is from the Crime Library of Patricia Cornwell. Macnaghten 1853-1921 is best known for his 1894 "Memorandum" in which he offered Druitt Kosminski and Ostrog as the prime suspects for the identity of "Jack the Ripper". Octavo. Photogravure portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. Original red combed cloth title gilt to spine and to the front board. Contemporary ownership inscription to front pastedown: "Trelissick Dec '14" possibly referring to Trelissick House in Cornwall. Spine a touch faded extremities gently bumped edges and outer leaves foxed: a very good copy. hardcover
