Williams decries the long custom of a "prevailing inattention and ignorance respecting the proper design and performance of psalmody the most painful and pernicious abuse and perversion in this part of divine worship." An important and explicit endorsement from the pulpit of the contemporary cultural erasure of native American styles of sacred public music with its emphasis on fugues and ornamentation and its replacement with the "smooth academic European harmonies" Nitz of English psalmody this an address by the clergyman Williams endorsing the work of Norfolk Musical Society in bringing the state of church singing in Norfolk County more into line with the proper form for worship. Though the annual meetings of the Norfolk Musical Society all featured sermons though the next of none of those sermons seem to survive; this discourse would seem to be of a piece of the advocacy for this musical reform. Baxter with 25 full page wood engravings with the hand colored frontispiece of Tu Po Chief of Rarotonga which often is lacking. When John Williams arrived at Samoa there were already a number of crude Christian cults the Tongans had already been converted in large part to Weslyan Methodism. He treated them with respect even understanding the dilemmas of renouncing their old gods. Of course their relative sexual freedom was also a difficult issue. This issue is complete and the map is in fine condition. Bound in ¾ calf over marbled paper covered boards edges speckled brown and blue raised bands ruled in gilt one compartment lettered in gilt light wear to binding a few spots of foxing or toning to title page and some plates the outer margin of page ix may either have been repaired or simply a stain p. 505 outer margin repaired. The final work on France by Helen Maria Williams first English woman to write about the upheavals of the French Revolution when she traveled there in 1790. She later became repulsed by Robespierre and the reign of terror but following the Revolution returned to France to live and become a French citizen.
