Very good copy.</p><p>Very nice catalogue of books formed by the Protestant divine former rector at St. Stephens in Dublin and the English Congregation in Rome. He was the author of a number of sermons on topical subjects of the day and wrote essays published in his "Correspondence on the Roman Catholic Controversy" published in 1865.</p><p>The auction sale was organized over five days in May in 1867 and included 1717 lots. As the title suggests this is a gentleman's library reflecting a diverse collecting range from early theology to contemporary novels. His voyage and travel section is considerable.</p><p>Allibone S. 1854633Washington: Office of Pacific Railroad Exploration & Survey War Department 1854. 22 3/4 x 10 inches. Very good condition. This is a finely detailed map of the geology encountered between the Rio Grande River and the Red river during the 32nd parallel survey. It is based in a riverine underlying map. The majority of the findings was a Ccrustceous base. The map goes from Ft. Towson to El Paso. Around Ft Belknap is found a Carboniferous sandstone. The expedition was an early attempt to locate a southern based route for a railroad to the Pacific Ocean. It was supported by influence of senators and Representatives of the Southern States. A frontispiece of Blake by John Linnell.Despite not receiving great critical acclaim during his life William Blake was one of the most influential poets in English History. A key figure within the 19th century Romantic movement Blake inspired huge swathes of poets including W.B. Yeats who would later become a very successful poet himself and win the 1923 Nobel Prize in Literature. This particular collection contains over 100 of Blake's poems and have been separated into each of his books including Songs of Experience and Songs of Innocence. The English Picture Publishing Company was formed by Pre-Raphaelites Charles Rowley George Milner and Frederic Shields " It was all done under Madox Brown's influence we lost half our cash but we spread some fine things the like of which was not on the market." They set about to publish photographic reproductions of the work of contemporary and earlier British artists. The company became the Fine Art Autotype Company. The company operated out of Manchester. Any prints by this company are scarce. Some have found their way into prestigious collections e.g. The British Museum & The Wellcome Library. There is no mention of these prints on the net. They are 15" by 22" though the actual images are 6".5 by 8.5". They are autotypes which is a photographic process and began in 1868. "The mourners" "Eve's Dream" "Comus. A graphic account of the slave rebellion in Dutch Guiana 1772- 1777 illustrated with 81 engravings including 3 folding maps after drawings by the author by William Blake 13 with an additional 3 attributed to him Bartolozzi Benedetti Barlow and others. Sabin 91075 called this "one of the richest contemporary accounts of a plantation society in the Americas." According to the DNB Stedman's narrative is "one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned." Stedman also depicts the social and natural history of the area in detail and many of the engravings illuminate his writings on these subjects. Between 1909 and 1941 he wrote thirty-six novels five volumes of short stories two original plays and three volumes of memoirs. His range included disturbing studies of the macabre children's stories and historical fiction most notably his Herries Chronicle series set in the Lake District. He worked in Hollywood writing scenarios for two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in the 1930s and played a cameo in the 1935 version of David Copperfield. As a gay man at a time when homosexual practices were illegal for men in Britain Walpole conducted a succession of intense but discreet relationships with other men and was for much of his life in search of what he saw as "the perfect friend". He eventually found one a married policeman with whom he settled in the English Lake District. Having as a young man eagerly sought the support of established authors he was in his later years a generous sponsor of many younger writers. Original calf rather worn with some hinges cracked. Gilt on raised backstrip also rather worn. Volume 1 has some cracking to spine. Some spotting. Volume 1 has one minor worm hole on the lower margin the goes through a number of pages to the rear pastedown. Volume 3 has a small worm hole that goes through the entire lower margin of the book and becomes two holes that continues to the back pastedown. Volume 9 has some minimal worming at the rear pastedown. The text in all volumes is unaffected. Volumes 1 and 3 have a few untrimmed pages. Each volume has a bookplate from the previous owner Henry Frederick Thistlethwayte at front. Volume 1 is inscribed with a note from Thistlethwayte to his son Alfred. The plates are fine impressions. <br /> <br /> § Large-paper issue of the best illustrated collection of Shakespeare's plays save only the elephant-folio Boydell. This was one of Fuseli's major projects as a book-illustrator and it succeeds brilliantly; the engravings are dramatic and rich and in this edition well printed. Blake engraved two plates after Fuseli for the book. Vol. VII for King Henry VIII and vol. X for Romeo and Juliet. There was a nine-volume small-paper issue with greatly inferior printing of text and plates but as Bentley observed "the ten-volume edition is considerably more elegant." Bentley 498.
