Folio 13 ½ x 10 ½ inches. 6 pp. Wraps fully split else near fine with some very light foxing and soiling to wrap overall very attractive. Very good. An early phonograph-related sheet associated with the French soprano Marie Roze née Hippolyte Ponsin 1846–1926 whose participation in early demonstrations of Thomas Edison’s tinfoil phonograph was widely publicized in 1878. Contemporary reports identify Roze as the “celebrated prima donna†depicted singing into the phonograph in an engraving produced for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper New York April 20 1878 following a demonstration of the machine at Steinway Hall earlier that year. The same engraving was subsequently reused across multiple promotional formats including tickets to phonograph exhibitions advertising circulars and early phonograph-themed sheet music such as Phonograph. March Brillante.<br /> <br /> Related promotional material includes a poster advertising exhibitions of Edison’s new tinfoil phonograph in Toronto on May 28 1878 which employs the identical image of the prima donna singing into the apparatus beneath the heading “Edison’s Phonograph!†The poster announces daily demonstrations featuring singing speech and explanatory lectures illustrating the standardized visual language used to market the invention during its first year of public exhibition.1<br /> <br /> Roze an internationally known operatic soprano who later became Mrs. Henry Mapleson was connected with early phonograph demonstrations intended to showcase the recording and playback of trained vocal performance. The engraving linking her image to the machine circulated widely in print culture during 1878 appearing in illustrated journalism and promotional ephemera tied to touring exhibitions. Overall a very nice copy of what was an iconic image at the time. Blake was a highly prolific composer of over 5000 songs the most famous of which is Rock-a-Bye Baby. The short collection of verse largely devotional also contains an interesting panegyric exalting the role of the Bishop of Mashonaland in saving a comrade during the First Matabele War in Zimbabwe titled "A True Incident of the Matabele Campaign." First published in 1857 this preferred 1860 printing includes all of the original text with additional info up until 1860 including John Brown and the Insurrection at Harper's Ferry the Dred Scott decision and the 36th Congress in 1859 & the Impending Crisis. An exhaustive academic text up through 1860 with a focus on Slavery and the Slave Trade in the United States as well as its political components. The English Picture Publishing Company was formed by Pre-Raphaelites Charles Rowley George Milner and Frederic Shields " It was all done under Madox Brown's influence we lost half our cash but we spread some fine things the like of which was not on the market." They set about to publish photographic reproductions of the work of contemporary and earlier British artists. The company became the Fine Art Autotype Company. The company operated out of Manchester. Any prints by this company are scarce. Some have found their way into prestigious collections e.g. The British Museum & The Wellcome Library. There is no mention of these prints on the net. They are 15" by 22" though the actual images are 6".5 by 8.5". They are autotypes which is a photographic process and began in 1868. "The mourners" "Eve's Dream" "Comus. Between 1909 and 1941 he wrote thirty-six novels five volumes of short stories two original plays and three volumes of memoirs. His range included disturbing studies of the macabre children's stories and historical fiction most notably his Herries Chronicle series set in the Lake District. He worked in Hollywood writing scenarios for two Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films in the 1930s and played a cameo in the 1935 version of David Copperfield. As a gay man at a time when homosexual practices were illegal for men in Britain Walpole conducted a succession of intense but discreet relationships with other men and was for much of his life in search of what he saw as "the perfect friend". He eventually found one a married policeman with whom he settled in the English Lake District. Having as a young man eagerly sought the support of established authors he was in his later years a generous sponsor of many younger writers. Mrs. Francis Blake wife of the physicist and inventor of telephone fame see DAB gave a small ‘dancing’ party for the ‘A’ list of Boston society. Participants were to depart from the Columbus Ave. station and return to the Huntington Ave. station 1:45 AM via private train. The original engraved invitation precedes the individual acceptance and rejection few letters which are divided by sex. A complete list of attendees is included as is the handwritten menu perhaps a contract with notes on what was to be supplied by the caterer Joseph Lee and what by Mrs. Blake. The stationery includes many addresses on Beacon Hill as well as the Porcellian Club Somerset Club Hasty Pudding Club etc. Some wear to the binder and to some of the correspondence at folds or at the edges.
