A very good copy. Ink signature at front of Wm. C. Pritchard. Â§ New edition taken largely from the 1866 edition with some slight changes including an expanded preface and two more poems. Although a typographic issue of the Songs had appeared in 1839 and Gilchrist and Rossetti had included them in the 1863 biography neither of those versions were faithful to Blakeâ€™s original text with Rossetti in particular standing accused of efforts at â€œimprovementâ€. The editor of this edition Richard Herne Shepherd gives for the first time in accessible form the exact text of Blakeâ€™s idiosyncratic engraved publications of 1789 and 1794 only twenty-two complete copies of each of which survive though omitting lines from â€œMaryâ€ and from â€œAuguries of Innocenceâ€ which contained the word â€œwhoreâ€. A unique augmented copy of this detailed local theatre history with the pencil ownership signature of Samuel W. Brown--presumably Providence worthy Samuel Welch Brown 1824-1907--and the semi-legible pencil signature of perhaps his son Arthur Brown; this copy includes a CDV portrait mounted to the verso of the front blank and annotated in the margin in pencil as Charles Blake; also with a folded printed column similar to a galley proof mounted to the rear endpaper and headed "Charles Blake" with the pencil annotation at the head "Written in imitation of the obituary notices by E. H. Hazard in the Journal by Mr. Blake himself" as well as two tipped-in playbills--one a large approx. 17 x 6.25 inch playbill advertising a performance of Howard and the Foxes among other attractions at Cleveland Hall and with an imprint for Greene Granite Building; and smaller 6.75 x 4.75 inch handbill advertising the "the Young and Beautiful American Actress!" Alice Placid Mann appearing in 1862 at the Providence Theatre on Pine at Dorrance. Cromek to prepare forty drawings illustrating Robert Blair's The Grave a popular "Graveyard" school poem first published in 1743. Cromek planned to select twenty of these designs for a deluxe edition of the poem. In Cromek's first prospectus of November 1805 Blake is named as both the designer and engraver of fifteen designs. Blake etched one image Deaths Door in white-line but Cromek rejected it. The dark power of the white-line print appeals to modern tastes but was far from fashionable in the early nineteenth century. In a second prospectus also of November 1805 Cromek announced that Luigi or Louis Schiavonetti would engrave twelve designs for the new edition. Blake had lost the potentially lucrative commission to engrave his own designs; his relationship with Cromek descended into anger and argument. In spite of their disagreement Cromek included a portrait of Blake as a frontispiece to the volume published in 1808. Cromek promoted the book aggressively and the illustrations to The Grave became Blake's best known work through much of the nineteenth century." Gilchrist's title 'Pictor Ignotus' had not been mere showmanship. Blake had been unknown and Gilchrist made him sensationally well-known. From 1863 on Blake took an unchallenged place in literary and artistic history as one of the great figures of the Romantic Movement. Gilchrist's biography is still in many respects the best biography of Blake" pp. 12-13. 24 cm; 2 volumes. i-v vi-xv 1-389; i-v vi-vii 1-3 4-268 pages and 66 plates including the "Job" engravings and 16 plates from electrotypes of the copperplates of "Songs of Innocence and of Experience." Bound in roughly contemporary red half morocco over marbled boards with gilt-tooled compartments on spine with original gilt-stamped morocco covers laid down on front pastedowns in both volumes. Â§ A beautiful copy handsomely bound with the frontispiece printed in five colors. Friedman Color Printing in England #31. The Vershbow copy with bookplate. DNB notes: â€œPossibly his greatest achievement however was his didactic poem Triumphs of Temper 1781 which â€˜was to reform the entire feminine mind of England by the adviceâ€™ Bishop 53. This allegorical work aspired in rhyming couplets to teach young women the virtues of a pleasant nature. Its advice was heeded by some: Emma Hamilton thanked Hayley â€˜for the lessons she had learnt from the poemâ€™ P. Jaffe Drawings by George Romney 1978 44 and asked Romney to inform Hayley that his poem â€˜made me Lady H. â€¦ for Sir W. minds more temper than beautyâ€™ ibid.
