Internally quite fresh and clean. Illustrated with 6 full page hand-colored lithographs of flowers including frontispiece and 4 b/w full page drawings of botanical subjects with keys at end. Upper outside corner of one of the flower plates lacking without affecting image. Some noticeable transference of color to opposite pages from color plates. A surprisingly interesting collection of reports on crab and lobster fisheries in the United Kingdom. It includes an appendix of natural history information but focuses on interviews with fishmongers and fisherman about their customs experiences and recommendations for future regulations in the trade. The reports detail differences in fishing practices standards and terminology within each region. Depending on the region different sizes of crabs and lobsters were considered to be acceptable for selling. Some regions reported significant hardships and recommended placing limits on catching given the sparsity of their catches. At the time it appears there were no federal regulations regarding size limits and it seemed to be a common opinion amongst fisherfolk that if regulations were set and enforced populations of crabs and lobsters might increase. Names of individuals interviewed along with particulars about their fleets practices and fish related thoughts are included in detail. The overall consensus seemed to be that there were noticeably less crabs and lobsters in recent years circa 1877 than 5 to 10 years prior; although this varies by region. Each interviewee seemed to have a different opinion as to why or how to fix the situation.<br /> <br /> Tall 8vo. Bound in navy cloth covered boards with original blue paper wrappers bound in as second endpaper. Interior very clean and bright with occasional pencil notations. Volume complete with three appendices a frontispiece foldout map and 8 folding illustrations of crabs and lobsters to the rear. Period bookplate to front pastedown.
