Appendix--Operations of 1917. Index. DJ has wear soiling tears chips and front flap corner clipped. Field Marshal Douglas Haig 1st Earl Haig KT GCB OM GCVO KCIE 19 June 1861 - 29 January 1928 was a senior officer of the British Army. During the First World War he commanded the British Expeditionary Force BEF on the Western Front from late 1915 until the end of the war. He was commander during the Battle of the Somme the Battle of Arras the Third Battle of Ypres and the German Spring Offensive. He had gained a favorable reputation during the immediate post-war years. He led the BEF during the final Hundred Days Offensive when it crossed the Canal du Nord and broke through the Hindenburg line capturing 195000 German prisoners. This campaign led to the armistice of 11 November 1918. It is considered to be one of the greatest victories ever achieved by a British-led army. The purpose of the book is to present the more important political and military events of the War as they appeared through the eyes of one of the principal participants. For Haig's private papers have in one respect a unique value. He is the only great general in our history to have kept a detailed day-by-day record of events as they occurred during his campaigns. Haig wrote it while the story was fresh in his memory usually on the evening of the day when the events that he relates occurred. Even when he was at his busiest he seldom allowed more than three or four days to elapse before he brought his diary up to date. As a result it has the advantage of being a fresh and vivid record written before he had time to forget or need to invent. The object of this book is to present that record-or those parts of it which are of historical interest-and to present it as far as possible in the form in which Haig wrote it.
