A publication of the Societe Archeologique et Historique de la Charente. This volume is about the ancient cemetery at Herpes near Courbillac in the Charente area Cognac region of France. In 1886 Philippe Delamain a merchant from Jarnac discovered a cemetery from the Merovingian period. Found in the excavation were an outstanding collection of weapons brooches jewellery and vases dating from the time when the Franks had settled in Herpes 5th-7th centuries AD. Delamain's collection was dispersed soon after its discovery but a significant proportion is in the British Museum. from Wikipedia This volume contains information about both the cemetery itself and about the items found there. Rich and remarkable iconography featuring 36 chromolithographic plates 187 plates and 1256 illustrations in the text. Translation and arrangement by Madame de Witt who compiled the texts in order to present them as a chronological history. Complete sets in the correct edition are relatively scarce. Striking publishers binding with elaborate gilt decoration signed A. Souze. Red half morocco with red percaline boards. Large gilt panel on the spine depicting an oak tree with two fleurs-de-lys and a shield charged with fleurs-de-lys as well as shell ornaments at the foot. Large and intricate gilt panel on the covers with a central blue panel scattered with fleurs-de-lys and various royal emblems and ornaments forming a decorative scheme evocative of the Middle Ages; four corner shields representing the four great French provinces. All edges gilt. Minor rubbing to the spine ends notably and to the blue panels on the boards. A perfectly fresh copy free of foxing seldom found in such condition. A very fine copy. First series: the chroniclers from Gregory of Tours to William of Tyre. Second series: the chroniclers from Suger to Froissart. Third series: the chroniclers from Froissart to Monstrelet. Fourth series: the chroniclers from Monstrelet to Commynes. An interesting publication bringing together the major historical texts written before the Renaissance enhanced with abundant illustration.
