Its scarcity is perhaps accounted for by the unappetisingly downbeat blurb presumably written by John Lehmann in which the main character is described as ''cynical twisted and bitter. a strange man. a misantrhope''.Some faint spotting to endpapers. Small mark paper flaw to half-title and title-page. Good/Good. <p>The Norman port of Le Havre serves a physical terminus for Lantier in Zola's La Bête Humaine and a generation later we now see another anti hero Bernard Lehameau at the end of the line: washed-up frustrated and confused after serving in the 1914-18 war. Written in 1939 but set in 1916 it anticipates Queneau's later more famous works such as Exercices de Style and Zazie dans le Métro. Very rare indeed in this early 1948 translation. There is an ink stain to bottom of final thirty pages or so and the jacket has some loss to spine and is very fragile and a little grubby. </p> . John Lehmann unknown

The first work of Oulipo poetry it contains ten sonnets each divided into 14 strips one for each line. Each sonnet has the same rhyme sounds allowing 1014 = 100000000000000 different poems.
