Francois-Vincent Raspail was basically self-taught in the sciences but nevertheless made important contributions in the fields of organic chemistry biology of the cell and microscopy. Raspail was also continuously in trouble with the French state and enjoyed a widespread reputation as a defender of the individual against state power frequently spending long periods in jail.
