Though controversial upon release for departing from her realist roots the series has been reappraised as a bold political and metaphysical experiment. Lessing was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007 and also received the Somerset Maugham Award the French Prix Médicis étranger and the David Cohen Prize for Literature over the course of her career.
