"Surgical Removal of Meningiomas : Laurence Heister ushered in the era of surgical treatment of meningiomas with an operation in 1743 in Helmstad Germany. Heister operated on a 34-year-old Prussian soldier who presented with a fungating cranial lesion. Heister applied a caustic of lime; the patient died of postoperative infection.
