187511070Washington DC: U. S. Treasury Department Bureau of Engraving and Printing 1875. Hardcover. Near fine. Small quarto unpaginated. Bound in full red crushed morocco with gilt borders edges spine title and compartments. All edges gilt. 144 engravings plus frontispiece and engraved title page. A near fine example with some small nicks to the boards and some mild scattered foxing internally. An extraordinary volume one of a small and undetermined number of these U. S. Treasury specimen books. These were printed and bound by the Treasury Department's Bureau of Engraving and Printing and presented to a select few diplomats cabinet secretaries and members of Congress. The proof engravings contained within were designed for use on official US banknotes though some of the images were likely never used on actual money. At the turn of the 21st century numismatic experts had counted 47 known examples. Several more have come to auction primarily numismatic since then but they remain extremely rare in the trade. No two specimen books are exactly alike; they usually contain a number of portraits of Presidents and other notable politicians but some as in our copy contain a number of vignettes of major events and places in US history along with more abstract concepts such as "Loyalty" and "Liberty and Union." Some significant examples herein include "Reconstruction" "Valley Forge" "The Patent Office" and far too many more to list. A number of the engravings have no caption and some of these are the most alluring. For example one of the largest images depicts a Native American man sitting on a cut-down tree head in hands as though he is weeping. Before him is a modern city with dozens of billowing smokestacks. Clearly this image is meant to portray the imminent conclusion to the United States Government's closing of the frontier and final usurpations of land from Indigenous people. It almost goes without saying that each and every one of the vignettes and portraits is of the most excellent quality both in design and execution as both the artists and the printing tools were of the highest order of the day. Though undated the title page names George B. McCartree as Chief of the BEP on the title page a position he held from 1869-1876 which would approximate the date. When these books do occasionally come to auction there is much buzz. It is difficult to imagine a more interesting and treasured sort of volume for anyone who has an interest in numismatics and rare books. Very Rare Kentucky Printing of Thomas Clarkson's Foundational Anti-Slavery Text "An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species" 1816

1816201491816. Slavery and Abolition Clarkson Thomas. An Essay on the Slavery and Commerce of the Human Species Particularly the African 1816 printing one of the foundational intellectual works of the Anglo-American abolitionist movement here issued in a rare Kentucky imprint juxtaposing transatlantic antislavery thought within the slaveholding territories of the American South. Originally published in the late eighteenth century Clarkson's treatise compiled moral economic and documentary evidence against the Atlantic slave trade and became instrumental in mobilizing British abolitionists contributing to the passage of the 1807 Act abolishing the British slave trade. This 1816 Georgetown Kentucky edition demonstrates the continued circulation and influence of British antislavery arguments in the early American republic particularly in a state deeply where slavery was deeply entrenched from the time of its founding. The appearance of this text in Kentucky underscores the gradual growth of abolitionist sentiment reform movements active in the region during the early nineteenth century. Clarkson Thomas. Measures approximately 4¼ x 7 inches. Provenance: signed by Helen Love Van Rensselaer. This edition was issued for Reverend David Barrow a prominent Kentucky Baptist minister known for his antislavery convictions reflecting local reform networks committed to circulating abolitionist literature despite prevailing proslavery sentiment. John Winston Coleman author of Slavery Times in Kentucky 1940 and a major collector of Kentucky slavery and abolition materials described this Clarkson imprint as "one of the rarest of Kentucky anti-slavery tracts" attesting to its scarcity within regional print history. This printing embodies the persistence of organized moral opposition to slavery prior to the Civil War. Clarkson an important figure in the British abolition movement provided reformers with a systematic critique of the slave trade's violence and corruption. The Kentucky edition reflects how transatlantic abolitionist discourse was adapted and disseminated within American slave societies contributing to early nineteenth-century debates that would intensify in the decades preceding the Civil War. Some staining and spotting throughout with minor marginal chipping; binding worn but intact. Overall good only. A significant and regionally scarce Southern imprint of a cornerstone abolitionist text. unknown

Doorstepping the Indian Rebellion A fascinating and notable piece of 19th-century publishing history: a pair of publisher's blads in this case used by a salesman in the garnering of subscriptions for two very popular and topical part-works Robert Montgomery Martin's The Indian Empire 1858-59 and Charles Ball's The Indian Mutiny 1858-61; each gilt stamped on the front cover "Specimen. Not for Sale" and carrying at the end a number of pages for recording subscribers' details. The blad for The Indian Mutiny shows that our salesman was on the East Midlands circuit with the names of two individuals recorded in Radford and Nottingham: a Thomas Brown and a Joseph Houlton baker of Derby Road Nottingham the latter recorded in directories of the period. A blad is a sample book section used by publishers and their representatives for promotional purposes. These are particularly handsome examples presented in their now slightly faded but nonetheless impressive cloth bindings that alone would have been a temptation to the potential book buyer offering a choice selection of plates and the opening six or eight pages of text. Needless to say their highly ephemeral nature makes them decidedly uncommon. Two works large octavo. Each with steel-engraved frontispiece and vignette title page first work with 11 plates second with 8 both with hand-coloured engraved map of India and specimen of letterpress. McLean Victorian Book Design 1972 p.12.For this book Mary Byfield 1795-1871 who spent most of her life working for the Chiswick Press cut over 100 wood blocks. These blocks many of great beauty were in the main based on early designs by Holbein Dürer Tory &c. copied from Queen Elizabeth's Book of Christian Prayers London 1581 and 1590 but they also included some based on contemporary designs by Charlotte Whittingham although to distinguish the old from the new is virtually impossible.
