The poems in this work are Middle English to seventeenth century lyric works presenting extracts put to modern spelling. Early poems in this work include 'The Battle of Brunanburh' and Layamon's 'Brut'.This was a popular work when first published in 1790 going through six editions to 1851. The work introduced the average reader to "poetic archaeology" and offers a history of the country and the English language alongside the poetical examples.Compiled by antiquary and satirical poet George Ellis.Bookplate of Sir George Talbot 3rd Baronet to the front paste downs.
