164621224<p><b>1646 Pomponius Mela Situ Orbis Ancient Geography Solinus Aethicus Cosmographia</b></p><p>'<i>De Situ Orbis' </i>by Pomponius Mela <b>was the only authority on ancient geography for more than 1000 years</b>. Written in the middle of the 1st-century this work describes all of the known world as it was in the first-century AD noting the locations of the British Islands a survey of the Roman Empire and even some of the earliest accounts of ancient Roman topography. </p><p>This 1646 Vogel edition was published in Leiden published as an extension of the famed Elzevier publishing house. Being a variety of poetry prose and essay bound in one volume. Four uncommon works bound as one. With a frontispiece and vignette title to 'La Malice des Femmes Ou Les Fourberies Feminines' and 'Le Demerite Des Femmes'. The first two works to this volume are written anonymously with no record of their authorship. The first work 'La Malice des Femmes Avec La Farce de Martin Baton' is undated and there does not appear to be a record of this particular imprint. Dated c1700 in accordance to other Rouen imprints of same pagination. The second work to this volume is a collection of anecdotes regarding the malice or cunning of women. It contains a number of 'comic and entertaining' anecdotes at the expense of women. The third work to this volume is a poem titled 'le merite des femmes' by the famous French playwright poet and moralist critic. The fourth work to this volume is a piece written by the 19th Century French playwright Auguste Imbert. This piece has a graphic frontispiece and title page of a woman being hanged. To the preface Imbert speaks of these images he sketched saying that it is not a hollow dream or imagination but what should be reality. He then goes on to speak of women's wiles. This work is an interesting collection of viewpoints and satire towards women in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. All works are in French. In a quarter calf binding with marbled boards. Externally generally smart with patches of rubbing to the head and tail of spine as well as to the joints. Further bumping to the extremities. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. Title page of the first work has been laid down ovr a new page due to damage. Prior owner's inscription to the verso of front endpaper in French. Appeared under the auspices of the great Cardinal" Darlow & Moule ; the first edition of the Greek New Testament from the Imprimerie Royale founded by Louis XIII in 1640. It is a substantial reprint with a few alterations of the New Testament printed by the Elzevirs in 1624 adding a 30-page appendix of Variae Lectiones. The text was set in Garamond's Greek types from the mid-sixteenth century used by the Estienne dynasty of printers which subsequently became part of the equipment of the Imprimerie Royale. The publication is enriched by a fine engraved title-pageOld gilt-stamped calf with faded gilt. All edges gilt. Rebacked with modern brown buckram spine cover label in black morocco gilt; covers scuffed corners worn. Internally very clean with leaves lined in red. According to the owner's note on the 3rd blank- Dibdin states Vol I p137 : "This magnificent edition which was compliled at the solicitation of Cardinal Mazarinis Giulio Mazarini cardinal formed on those of R Stephens but more particularly on the third of 1550: he has however more particularly omitted the introductory part of that and the various readings. . The Bloody Assizes were a series of trials started at Winchester on 25 August 1685 in the aftermath of the Battle of Sedgemoor which ended the Monmouth Rebellion in England. They were led by Lord Chief Justice George Jeffreys. George Jeffreys 1st Baron Jeffreys of Wem PC 15 May 1645 18 April 1689 was also known as "The Hanging Judge". His historical notoriety comes from his actions in 1685 after Monmouth's Rebellion. Jeffreys was sent to the West Country in the autumn of 1685 to conduct the trials of captured rebels. At these trials later known as the "Bloody Assizes" Jeffreys issued harsh sentences to nearly all defendants. About 300 were executed and between 800 and 900 were transported to the West Indies. This narrative purports to be by "a particular friend" but was probably written by Le Clerc himself some 25 years before his death. 1713-London-Sam Buckley: The Life and Miracles of St. Wenefrede Together with her Litanies. With some Historical Observations Made Thereon. By Dr. Fleetwood. Including St. Beino's Life and Miracles translated from the British MS. Saint Winefride was a 7th-century Welsh Christian woman around whom many historical legends have formed. A healing spring at the traditional site of her death is now a shrine and pilgrimage site called St Winefride's Well in Holywell Flintshire Wales known as the Lourdes of Wales. Intermittently clean and browned being several different pamphlets in different conditions but generally clean just a few spots. Title pages often dusted.
