The Peerage Bill was a measure proposed by the British Whig government led by James Stanhope and Charles Spencer. The measure would have largely halted the creation of new peerages limiting membership of the house of Lords. Bound to the start is a portion of a nineteenth century reference work on the peerage bill. There is a list of contemporary works issued against and for the bill. A prior owner has annotated this. Comprising: "The Plebeians by a Member of the House of Commons" 1719 by Sir Richard Steele ESTC reference no T114589 the sixth edition issued the same year as the first edition. The Book of Common Prayer has numerous plates. Both are bound together in contemporary English full red calf with elaborate gilt decorations and a black medallion with the initials JHS on the front. Condition is GOOD ; the front joint is broken and the cover only attached by the first pg of text which has a tear due to the condition. Otherwise the covers are clean with mild shelf wear and a lovely aged patina. The text of both books is bright and clean. Given ambiguity of the title search terms were broadly "Pazzini Carli" and "Poesie" which should have picked up any copies. We have found copies of a collection of sonnets relating to the same event but this work issued in octavo format is clearly different than the one on offer here. 4to. 30.5 by 21.5 cm. 10 LXXIII 78 pp. An anthology created in honor of a wedding the work contains 28 poems many of which are accompanied by a finely rendered copper engraved illustration and a few also decorated with lovely tailpiece vignettes. The event being celebrated is the marriage between Anton-Giulio Brignole Sale patrician of Genoa and Anna Maria Pieri patrician of Siena. Title page heavily soiled. Otherwise quite clean with linen rich paper stock. Later binding has decorative paper on spine and corners but is otherwise an unadorned thick cardboard and unprepossessing. Worming to 4 volumes affecting text significant in two volumes. <br> An array of laws issued restructuring the French state and government. Of the 112 laws bound in seven are of significant note. 1.: A decree issued on June 21 1791 in response to the Royal family's flight to Varennes the night prior stating that all public officials and soldiers to prevent any and all persons leaving the country including guns ammunition gold etc.<br>2. La societe des amis de la constitution which within a year would become the Jacobin Club. This society objective was to work for the consolidation of the Constitution and this proclamation deals with praising the Assembly's ability to accrue public funds and the framework tax collecting in the new Constitution.<br> 3. The Allarde Decree dated 2nd of March 1791 which abolished guilds and corporations. This law along with the tax issued on the 17th proclaimed the principle of freedom of trade and industry which has become one of the general principles of French law. It was followed 3 months later with the Loi Le Chapelier.<br> 4. The De la contribution mobiliere from February 18th 1791 is the personal property tax on housing. <br> 5. Various laws bound in deal with the reorganization of military ranks and the advancement of the Artillery Corps reforms relating to the 1791 Reglement. 6. The formation of the L'administration du Tresor public or the national administration of the Treasury. It was created to assist the Assembly and delegate funds for the State as the country was near bankruptcy in 1790 and 1791. <br> 7. The Law of 16th September 1791. Contains Benjamin Franklin's "An Account of the Effects of Electricity in paralytic cases." <br> Benjamin Franklin was involved not only with the nature of electricity but with its possible medical utility. People of the 18th century hoped 'electrical fire' would provide a cure for paralysis. They believed that sending a charge through the affected limbs might increase blood flow regenerate muscle and restore movement or physical control. Franklin was doubtful about the usefulness of electrical treatment for palsy and paralysis and never promoted himself as an electrical therapist. Nonetheless because of his reputation as an electrical innovator he was from time to time contacted by people seeking electrical therapy. Using an electrostatic generator in which electrical charge was created by rubbing material against a mounted glass ball or cylinder turned by a crank and a Leyden jar which stored the electrical energy Franklin obliged those patients who came to him desiring electrical therapies though Franklin's patients found no permanent cure for their paralysis. Elizabeth Greenly born at Titley Court Herefordshire was a noted and varied collector. She kept prolific diaries from 1784 until her death in 1839 which included her responses to current events and occasions in her daily life. Among the diaries many names and anecdotes of celebrities of the time appear including Lord Byron Marie Antoinette Mary Wollstonecraft and Hannah More. She was known to comment on customs of foreign countries to which she and her friends had travelled and had a keen interest in scientific discoveries and advancements including medicine and archaeology. The Greenly library contents show Elizabeth Greenly's numerous interests including: Welsh causes Science topography travel Bibliana and literature particularly female poets. The library contains many first editions of contemporary works and many are signed or contain her bookplate. The library contained over 1000 volumes which show the diversity and depth of her interests and give an insight into the life of this fascinating collector. These works come directly from the library of the Titley Court estate. Volumes I and XXI are lacking the bottom two spine labels. Volumes XVIII XVIX and XXVII are lacking middle spine label. Volumes X XVI XVII XX and XXII are lacking top two spine labels. Volume XXXIV is lacking bottom spine label. Volume XXV has all three spine labels. Rear board to volume XVI has a crack 2.5" long diagonally upwards from the tail of the spine. Front joint to volume V is starting but firm. Rear joint to volume XVII is starting but firm. Small crack to front joint of volume X. Front hinges to volumes V and VII are tender with cords showing. Both hinges to volume X are tender with the cords showing. Front hinges to volumes IV and XXV and XXVII are slightly strained but firm. Rear hinge to volume VXVI is tender with cords showing. The textblock to volume X has detached from spine at the rear hinge though the pastedown is still intact and firmly bound to textblock. Internally volumes I II III IV V XI XII XVIIXVIII XVIX XX XXII XXI XXV XXIII XXIV XXVII XXXIV XXXV and XXXVI are all firmly bound. Volume VI is generally firmly bound though strained in places. Two plates and the first six leaves to volume VII are disbound but present the rest of the volume is otherwise generally firmly bound. The front endpapers to volume X are detatched from textblock though still attached to pastedown. Pages 81-84 and a plate of Cato to volume X are disbound but present. The overall binding to volume X is weak. Rear marbled endpaper and pastedown to volume XVI are detached but present with the remaining endpapers weak. Overall volume XVI is generally firmly bound though strained in places. Overall pages are generally bright. Small scorch mark to endpaper and final leaf of volume II doesn't affect the text. Tear to bottom corner of the leaf ix/x to volume V's Fair Penitent does not affect text. Tear to final leaf of volume XXVII affecting the running title. Tear to corner of pp 31-36 of volume XXXIV's The Ambitious Stepmother affecting the edge of 12 lines of text. Spotting to volume VII. Scattered spots throughout volume XII. The odd spot throughout the remaining 23 volumes. Ribbon bookmarks present to all volumes. Good John Bell hardcover
