In a half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally smart. Light rubbing to the spine and to the paper to the boards. The rear hinge and joint arse slightly strained but remain firm and the front hinge is also slightly strained which has resulted in the front joint starting but remaining firm. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities and caused a little loss of leather. Prior owners ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper noting the contents of the volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean throughout with the odd spot and handling mark throughout. Very Good Various hardcover

Being a collection of four single month issues of various publications from 1886-1890. With beautiful coloured plates. Comprising of: 'Yule Tide Cassell's Christmas Annual' 'The Queen The Lady's Newspaper and Court Chronicle' - March 1886 issue 'The Gentlewoman' Volume I No 10 September 13 1890. 'The Graphic Christmas Number 1886' 'Yule Tide' is undated. Advert for 'Borax Dry Soap' states 'For The Year Eighty Eight and All Succeeding Time' and publisher's adverts are for the year 1888-89 therefore this is likely to be from December 1888. 'The Graphic Christmas Number' contains eleven large colour plates one of which is a double-page spread. With the front wrap for 'The Graphic' bound in at the rear. With four full page images to 'Yule Tide'. All three of the periodicals are adorned with adverts for Victorian companies such as Beechams Pears' Soap and Cadbury's. There are numerous adverts for wig-makers and corsets in addition to Liberty and Co London. 'Yule Tide' is a publication by Cassell and Co intended as a festive gift. It contains poems short stories and a humorous image of anthropomorphic cats. An advert for Beechams is to the start of this work which depicts Henry Fielding as Hamlet with the caption 'To Beecham or not to Beecham'. 'The Queen' is a periodical tailored for women. There are job vacancies for governesses companions book reviews opera reviews fashion bridal dress advice sewing and embroidery patterns and much more. 'The Gentlewoman' was a weekly illustrated paper for women that was founded in 1890. It originally ran under the title 'The Gentlewoman: An Illustrated Weekly Journal for Gentlewomen' before merging with 'Eve: The Lady's Pictorial' in 1926. Over the years contributors to this periodical included Bram Stoker Frances Trollope Florence Marryat Arthur Conan Doyle and Mrs Edward Kennard. This issue has chapters on gardening 'jottings from the moors' and chapters from 'A New Novel' by Miss Katherine Watson. 'The Graphic' was a British weekly newspaper noted for its illustrations. The periodical held great esteem in the art world and noted admirers include Vincent Van Gogh and Hubert von Herkomer. Contributors included Randolph Caldecott Luke Fildes James H Dowd and more. A lovely example of the variety periodicals available in the Victorian era. In a full straight-grained morocco binding. Externally excellent with just some minor shelfwear to the extremities. The trunk styles include: Saratoga Packing Dress Barrel Top Plain Gothic Railroad linen collar trunk in patent leather leather cornered hat box Ladies with a place for a parasol etc. Locke and Sons paid taxes in the now obsolete 28th Congressional District of New York based in Rochester Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Their customers are fairly local: LeRoy Elmira Geneva Owego Niagara Falls Penn Yan etc. An interesting view of styles of trunks and their prices. In 1878 J. C. Locke received a patent for a trunk design. </p>

The two most famous contributions to the series would be Emily Dickinson's poem "Success" the only poem published in her lifetime and Louisa May Alcott's extreme stylistic and thematic departure from her earlier novels "A Modern Mephistopheles." Madeleine B. Sterne writes in her essay on the series that "a close study of the No Name Series yields many blessings to scholars for it casts light upon publishing history popular literary taste author-publisher relations and the role of American women novelists during a significant decade." The overwhelming majority of authors whose identities have been ascertained are women including Helen Hunt Jackson Harriet Waters Preston Julia Constance Fletcher Annette Calthorpe Lucretia Peadbody Hale etc. Also notable is "The Great Match" which is perhaps the first novel pertaining to baseball. All 26 volumes are in generally VERY GOOD condition showing variously marginal loss from the head and foot of the spines some gilt titling lightly rubbed or tanned some corners shelf rubbed and tapped the occasional former owner name of the period otherwise the bindings remain strong the texts are clean and unmarked and the boards remain colorful and distinct.
