Both early-19th-century important works the books documented the holidays customs and religious landmarks of the Russian Eastern Orthodox Church. The first title literally translated as "The Book of Months" was essentially an ecclesiastical calendar containing the names of the saints in order of the dates on which they were commemorated and the festivals in their honor. Each month's entry was illustrated with beautiful wood engravings which depicted that month's saints as portrayed by the Orthodox Church. The second book gave descriptions and histories of famous Russian monasteries noteworthy cathedrals and churches in St. Petersburg and Moscow and more. Good in the publisher's original green cloth over beveled boards with gilt text and black decorations on the spine and the same on the front board with brown clay end sheets. The cloth at the upper front joint is worn and rubbed through and the front and rear hinges have been repaired. Nonetheless the binding remains tight and strong with no loose or weak signatures. The cloth at the head and heel of the spine is rubbed through as it is in several areas at the lower edge of the boards. In 1896 the journal changed its name to The Nidologist and publication changed to New York City. Publication of The Nidologist suspended after volume IV no. 9 1897 and merged into the Popular Science Monthly. Wood in his Bookseller Inventory p.492 remarks that "This well-edited magazine practically continued the defunct Ornithologist and Oologist.
