A delightful and very scarce anthology of poetry consisting of the winners of the French Academy poetry prize from the mid seventeenth to mid eighteenth century. In the original French.The very scarce first edition of this collection of poetry. Presenting the winners of the poetry prize of L'Academie Francoise between 1671 and 1748 published on behalf of the Academy.As the prize was not held every single year between these dates presented here are forty-two examples of French poetry between these years. Established in 1635 the purpose of the Academy was to maintain standards of literary taste and to establish the literary language of France.The contents detail either the subject or title of each winner and their name beginning with 'Le Duel Aboli' by Bernard de La Monnoye in 1671 La Monnoye won the prize four further times in his lifetime and concluding with Jean-Francois Marmontel's poem on the glory of Louis XIV in 1746.Other winners include Antoine Houdar de la Motte Antoinette Deshoulieres Nicolas-Michel Linant and Catherine Bernard. The latter two won the prize a number of times each.A fascinating and very scarce work that provides insight into the most celebrated French poetry of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. In a full calf binding with gilt detailing to back strip. Minor loss of leather to back strip tail. Rubbing resulting in loss of leather to front and rear joints and board perimeters. Front and rear joints starting with boards holding firm. Front free endpaper absent. Internally firmly bound. Pages clean and bright with the odd area of light spotting. Antoinette Ligier de la Garde was married at 13 to Sieur Deshoulières a woman of taste and wit she cared only to live as she pleased. She was however the first female academician Arles. She was an original mind whose verses contain a certain interiority. It was her friends who urged her to publish her poems which had considerable success. Handsome copy perfectly executed. Madame Deshoulières was regarded as the foremost poetess of her time and became moreover the first female academician. She held one of the most brilliant salons of the period she was a refined and remarkably cultured mind taking close interest in the sciences. Her poetry reflects the gallant spirit of the 17th century but also its morality; the volumes bringing together songs epistles idylls tragedies and occasional pieces. She was a précieuse moving in the circle of Luxembourg with the Duchess of Montpensier and in a circle of libertines. The edition of her Poësies contributed greatly to her contemporary literary fame. Of all the 17th- and 18th-century books "on military technology no works had greater influence or enjoyed greater prestige than those of Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban the great military engineer of the reign of Louis XIV" Guerlac. Although a highly practical man and not a theoretician Vauban had written down the secrets of his success in the building and capturing of fortresses between 1669 and 1704. Vauban's strategic superiority could only remain if this information was kept secret so his texts circulated only within a very select circle. After Vauban's death they were leaked. "By the time the treatises became available Vauban's early readers must have been ready to believe that the text finally being made public did in fact contain incredible military secrets and have the power to make nations invincible. No other treatise of siegecraft had been surrounded by such secrecy" DeJean. The first volume contained Vauban's treatise on the attack of fortified places but the added part on defence was actually written by a colleague seigneur Deshoulières 1621-1693.
