Souvenir program from the premiere screening of Guitry's epic film the first such dramatic film about Napoléon since Abel Gance's 1927 silent classic. Guitry himself acted the part of Talleyrand in case star-studded cast that included Daniel Gelin and Raymond Pellegrin sharing the title role young and old and included Michèle Morgan Jean Marais O.W. Fischer Yves Montand Eric von Stroheim and Orson Welles. The gala permiere was held on March 17 1955 in Brussels -- a week prior to the much larger Paris premiere -- as a benefit for the Comité de Bruxelles de la Croix-Rouge de Belgique Brussels Committee of the Red Cross and the Comité des Dames de l'Entraide Française Ladies Committee of the French Mutual Aid. Although it recived a mixed critical reception Guitry's Napoléon was a tremendous popular success and oone of the top-grossing French films of 1955. Cinéma Marivaux unknown

Trade edition. Signed & inscribed by Guitry in March 1918 to Edmond Roze theatre impresario and producer of this play. An extraordinarily NICE ASSOCIATION for this play. Also offered for sale along with the inscribed French trade edition is a hardcover English Version Translated by H. Granville Barker and published by Putnam in 1921. 8vo green cloth gilt-stamped. Very good. The first performance of the play occurred at the Vaudeville Theatre in Paris in February 1918. It was translated into English and ran on Broadway during 1920 and 1921. The French version was later made into a film in 1951 written and directed by Guitry. The title character of the play is based on Jean-Gaspard Deburau who was a real mime in the 1830s and whose unforgettable character was at the center of the film LES ENFANTS DE PARADIS THE CHILDREN OF PARADISE. <br /> <br /> PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings unless we specifically note otherwise. Also reprint of interview with Belasco and a tribute to Belasco. Belasco now known by most merely as the name of a theater was one of the leading theater impresarios and a flamboyant showmen in New York in the late 19th and early 20th century noted especially for his crowd-pleasing stage effects and popular entertainments. Condition: other than very minor wear along lower edge of DJ and a few spots on its rear this is a pristine copy and the DJ can still comfortably be described as in fine condition. In French. Good- condition. On Sacha Guitry from a public domain encyclopedia: Sacha Guitry 1885 – 1957 was a French film actor director screenwriter and playwright. Born in St. Petersburg Russia he was the son of Lucien Germain Guitry 1860–1925 a major Parisian stage actor who spent nine years at the Michel Theater in St. Petersburg before returning to France. It was during this time in Russia that Alexandre-Pierre Georges Guitry was born and nicknamed Sacha. An intellect and a prolific writer Guitry had already written the first of his 120 plays at age 17. In 1918 his theatrical production premiered in Paris to critical acclaim. In addition to his famous plays Sacha Guitry wrote acted and directed many films. He went on to be recognized as a truly innovative director sometimes compared to Orson Welles because of his techniques and numerous innovations. He died in Paris in 1957.
