He was a member of the National Convention and voted against the death penalty for Louis XVI later being imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. First edition apparently unrecorded variant issue or unrecorded early piracy of this classic play the basis of Gioachino Rossini's celebrated opera 'The Barber of Seville in a custom binding. Attractively bound in full blue calf over beveled boards spine title and ruled in gilt with twin gilt fleur-de-lys covers bordered with twin gilt rules and gilt floral devices at inner corners front cover filled with a veritable deluge of fleur-de-lys in gilt 239 in all in 24 rows rear cover features 49 gilt-tooled fleur-de-lys in a diamond design 7 x 7 on the diagonal blue silk patterned endpapers and ribbon marker. Binding is likely post World War II but does not appear recent. Spine a bit faded but does not distract; interior is nice with some aging to the edges and very light foxing. This title appears to be an unrecorded variant from those given in Cordier most closely matching #47 but with variants in pagination and the title page mis-spelling the author's name 'Beaumachais' and with other variants or perhaps an early piracy Title reads in full: 'LE BARBIER DE SÉVILLE OU LA PRÉCAUTION INUTILE COMEDIE EN QUARTRE ACTES; par M de Beaumachais Représentée sur le Théatre de la Comédie Française aux Tuileries le 23 de Fevrier 1775. From 1773 to 1774 Beaumarchais published 4 memoirs in which he dramatized his legal adventure one can see that he had chosen to represent himself. These 4 memoirs which blend dialogues and interrogations entertained all of Paris even Madame Du Barry and were performed everywhere in cafés and on the boulevards as they constitute a formidable comedy in which lies are ultimately revealed. Beaumarchais was indeed acquitted in the case that opposed him to Judge Goezman; the latter was the reporting judge in his trial regarding the Paris-Duverney inheritance which ruined and dishonored the author. Beaumarchais accused Goezman of corruption and the judge in turn accused Beaumarchais of defamation and attempted corruption. Judge Goezman constitutes above all a symbol of the corruption of the new Parliament erected by Louis XV and of the arbitrariness of justice. Imprimerie de Valleyre hardcover

Between 1773 and 1776 Beaumarchais published several memoirs in which he staged his own legal battle he had chosen to represent himself. These four memoirs blending dialogues and interrogations captivated all of Parisincluding Madame Du Barryand were performed in cafés and along the boulevards. They read like a brilliant comedy in which deception is ultimately unmasked. Beaumarchais was eventually acquitted in the case that opposed him to Judge Goezman who had been the reporting magistrate in the Paris-Duverney inheritance case that had brought Beaumarchais to financial ruin and public disgrace. In turn Beaumarchais accused Goezman of corruption while Goezman countered with charges of defamation and attempted bribery. The vanishingly scarce first English language translation of this work to be published in England. This English language translation was first published in Amsterdam in 1733. While the Amsterdam edition was illustrated throughout with Picard's engravings our first England edition was issued without illustrations.The text discusses classical fables and myths such as those found in Ovid's 'Metamorphoses'.
