EPHEMERA WOMAN ILLUSTRATOR. 5" x 12" in a 6 ¼" x 13 1/8" frame; chromoxylography on stiff paper stock; a few small chips on upper edge extending into image; near fine. In the small varnished oak frame in which it was found; reframed with archival backing and ready to hang. Bertha Corbett Melcher 1872-1950 was an artist and illustrator from Minnesota whose most enduring work was the Sunbonnet Babies. The Sunbonnet Babies and Sunbonnet Twins little girls dressed in large bonnets whose faces never showed first appeared in children's books and print advertising from about 1900 and remained very popular with Overall Boys through the 1930s. Often copied without giving her credit her little girl images spread rapidly. This little decorative card was designed by Bernhardt Wall 1872-1956 a lithographic illustrator and printed by the Ullman Manufacturing Company. The basic little rhyme can be traced back centuries in England but in the mid-19th century James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipp's version became the rhyme with which we are most familiar today. In his introduction to this book Wall explains that he had purchase an old two-volume set of The Spectator at a secondhand bookstore when he was a child. The tale printed here was a favorite of young Bernhardt. It is supposedly Addison's translation of a story about a man who as a joke was wrapped up like a mummy and then placed in bed between two beautiful naked women who teased him all night long.<br /> <br /> Wall's illustrations for the story are cartoonish not unlike the work for many of his postcards. But there are two other etchings near the front of the book of an entirely different character dark and moody. In one a ghostly figure kneels on a grave and in another a man tortured after death tries to catch a fish in his teeth while his arms are restrained. Wall also includes portraits of Addison and Plato in this volume.<br /> <br /> Published in an edition of 150 copies this is number 10.<br /> <br /> 21 etched leaves including eight text plates. The title page is dated 1925 and the copyright is dated 1926. Wall was a prolific designer of humorous postcards in the early twentieth century some 5000 designs are attributed to him. Beginning in the 1920s he began producing short books entirely comprised of etchings—both text and illustrations were engraved on copper plates and printed by Wall in his shop in Connecticut. The subjects were intensely personal and the illustrations were iconoclastic. First edition first printing. Very good in paper-covered boards with a cloth spine. A sort of leather label is affixed around the spine at the top of the book. It is partially worn away possible with loss of the title. Signed by Wall on the limitation page. Bernhardt Wall hardcover

This copy inscribed to Mrs. Jean Hale Mrs Gladys Taylor and Rosamund Jean Hale was Edwin Markham's secretary and all three are mentioned in the "Etcher's Notes" plate in the book. The inscription is signed by Bernhardt Wall dated Feb. 25 1937 Houston Texas "from our winter etcherie". Plain brown boards with an imprinted etching on the upper front board green cloth tape-covered spine 13 x 1/ 1/4 inches unpaginated 34 leaves excluding blanks at front and rear 34 etchings/plates including the limitation page most etchings signed by Wall. Includes etched plates of the text of Markham's Man With The Hoe. No dustcover. Fine. Rare indeed 3 OCLC copies. "Bernhardt Wall 18721956 was a Connecticut Yankee who wintered in La Porte Texas his wife's family home for many years. In the mid-1930s he produced at least three books of copper-plate engravings during his annual Texas sojourns: Following General Sam Houston 17931863 1935 Following Stephen F. Austin Father of Texas 1936 and Following Andrew Jackson 1937. The process was so tedious and time-consuming that the editions were always severely limited; however these are the finished work of a well-rounded artisan. Wall wrote his books designed them etched the plates printed and signed each etching then cut folded gathered sewed bound lettered and labeled them. After his wife's death in 1938 Wall like the horseman in his colophon rode away-back to Connecticut where he later remarried. He lived his own last years in Sierra Madre California." 1722RO091.
