1920WRCLIT61438New York: Printed and Published by the Artist 1920. Quarto. Original cloth tape backed boards with etched vignette. Separation between front free endsheet and second endsheet due to the weight of the boards some creasing to spine but a very good copy internally fine. Rear panel of dust jacket present. First edition thus and one of Wall's least common and most desirable productions consisting of twenty-two original etchings printed from zinc plates in various hues with each of the plates signed by the artist in the margin accompanied by the original etched preliminaries title index and colophon. Wall had originally intended the edition to consist of fifty copies but the zinc plates did not hold up sufficiently for that many impressions and he reduced the edition to twenty-six copies so corrected on the colophon in ink and signed by him. Two of the original etched zinc plates are inlaid into the inside of the boards in this case those for two of the best of the images: "Washington Square Arch" and "A Studio." A typed transcript of some comments Wall made in 1937 about the edition is laid in along with a 1948 cover letter from Dawson's Book Shop. Weber does not note the truncation of the edition gives a variant plate count - perhaps including some of the etched prelims in his count as this copy collates complete according to the index plus the two self- portraits - and notes "many copies have a cancelled plate embedded in the cover." As noted above this copy #22 has two of the original zinc plates and unlike Father Weber's copy has the etching on the upper board imprinted in the board itself rather than on a separate label. The descriptive text leaf describes this as the "third state" of the project no doubt referring to the 1918 TEN ETCHINGS OF GREENWICH VILLAGE. WEBER p.31. 1930137209New York: Self-Published 1930. Limited to 26 copies. Hardbound. Internally VG covers are weakly attached and spine cloth getting weaker due to weight of covers with embedded zinc etching plates one in each. Paper-covered thick cardboard covers with a thin and deteriorating cloth spine. Front cover upper right has an etching which represents the title of the book. No printing along spine. Four preliminary sheets each an etching followed by 22 signed etchings and finishing up with an unsigned etching as the endsheet. The Limitation page etched has written in ink that this is copy 25 of a total of 26. A laid-in typed sheet dated Lime Rock Ct. in 1937 states that the original intent was to print 50 copies of this the third state of the book. However it goes on to say the zinc plates began to deteriorate and the edition was halted at 26. Each inside cover has a plate embedded into it. The front cover has an architectural scene and the rear cover has a dancing scene. All 22 of the artist image etchings is signed. Weber p. 31: "An interesting pictorial presentation of 'the Montmartre of America' an area in Manhattan long frequented by authors artists and students." The limitation leaf describes Greenwich Village thus: "A hodge-podge of tumble-down tenements rickety architectural relics with a great deal of modernity just minced together. Inscribed by Bernhardt in French in the margin beneath the photograph and signed. Certificate of authenticity from "The Scriptorium" on the verso of frame. Some wear and scuffing to frame; photo with some creasing toning to margins tear to right edge affecting about 3" of the image; else very good. Stage and film actress Sarah Bernhardt 1844-1923 played Hamlet Joan of Arc and Cleopatra and was a true international icon. In a 2010 article on a Bernhardt biography for the Guardian Olivia Laing wrote "No one has ever grasped the art of eccentric showmanship like Sarah Bernhardt the foremost actress of her age who liked to accessorise with a dead bat never went on tour without her own coffin and once travelled round America accompanied by an alligator called Ali-Gaga who died sadly enough as a consequence of consuming too much milk and champagne. Not listed in the Internet Broadway Database but an early performance was reviewed by Clive Barnes for the New York Times on March 27 1973.<br/><br/>Playwright N. Richard Nash is best known for "The Rainmaker" 1954 adapted to the screen by Nash in 1956 and starring Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn.<br/><br/>In "Echoes" Tilda Lynn Milgrim and Sam David Selby debate reality happiness and their sanity while in what appears to be an asylum. 1952137373Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1952. Revised Final Draft script for the 1954 film. Studio File Copy rubber-stamped on the front wrapper. Three front wrappers are present each with varying rubber-stamps to indicate different drafts and each noting different directors: Thorpe who received final credit Mervyn LeRoy and Curtis Bernhardt. Brief annotations in holograph pencil on the verso of one page. <br/><br/>Based on the 1924 operetta of the same name by Sigmund Romberg and Dorothy Donnelly which in turn was based on the 1901 play "Old Heidelburg" by Wilhelm Eyer-Forster itself filmed four times between 1915 and 1959. <br/><br/>Mario Lanza was originally slated to star in the film but a dispute with MGM led him to getting fired from the picture. However MGM retained the rights to his already recorded vocals and had replacement Edmund Purdom lip sync them in the film. Ironically the songs "Beloved" and "Serenade" would become heavily associated with Lanza after the film and cast recording were hits. <br/><br/>Goldenrod titled wrappers noted as FINAL and COMPLETE on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 172 and production No. 1596 dated 7/18/52 with credits for screenwriters Ludwig and Levien producer Joe Pasternak and director Thorpe. 324 leaves with last leaf of text being the fourth page of a summary dated 11/12/53 and three front wrappers. Titleing etched in sepia paper label pasted flat on top board with no information on the exceedingly thin spine. This is copy #87 of 125 total and signed in pencil by the artist. There are 14 pps. each with an etched picture or piece of the narrative protected by tissue. The preface states that "Senator Vest had been retained as attorney by a man whose dog had been wantonly shot by a neighbor. The plaintiff demanded $200. After the speech of Senator Vestthe jury awarded the plaintiff $500 without leaving their seats." The dry-point etchings alternate between pictures and text. 1921WRCLIT58759New York: Bernhardt Wall 1921. Two original etchings platemarks 17.5 x 12.5 cm approx in sienna and brown with large margins. Matted. About fine a couple scuffs to mat. The first etching is the text of Drake's justification of collecting first editions both economic and intellectual and the second is Wall's etched portrait of Drake. These appeared as two of the sixteen original etchings prepared for I:3 of WALL'S ETCHED MONTHLY March 1921 limited to 125 copies. Drake served as the distributor and promoter at the time of Wall's periodicals and publications. He also sold single prints of the etchings see Weber p.53 but the two examples in hand have clean stabholes in the extreme left margins from once having been part of a copy of the issue. Weber also notes that Drake's selling price for individual prints was the same as for complete issues containing 16 etchings in this case. Bernhardt Wall unknown books
