With 20 engravings as frontis pieces for the plays plus the general frontis and the portrait of Moliere at the start of volume 1. With a life of Moliere and commentary. Includes Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Amphitryon L'escole des Maris L'escole des Femmes Le Misantrope Tartuffe others. Full contemporary calf wear at corners and hinges some of which are splitting but the bindings are all firm some rubbing to spine labels but an attractive set. Worming to the top edge of the first third of volume 4 occasionally obscuring letters in the running title and the edge of a few illustrations. Attractive engraved bookplate of Bernardine Murphy likely the Countess on the endpaper in volume 1. Size: Octavo 8vo. 5-volume set complete. Text is clean and unmarked. Quantity Available: 1. Late 19th century three-quarter gilt red morocco and marbled boards a.e.g. Engraved frontispiece portrait by Vertue after the painting by Pignard. Some foxing and uniform tanning thin paper flaw along outer margin of B6 in first volume with no loss lower portion of final general title backed at an early point with no loss of letterpress and a bit of soiling to lower margins of following three leaves but a good set attractively bound with the bookplates of Edward and Andrew W. Arnold. The first collected edition of Moliere in English translated with the exception of two of the plays with a prefatory Life by John Ozell a prolific translator of the times who found his capacity for such work derided by Pope and Swift. Moliere was of considerable influence on the English stage via adaptations and derivatives by greater and lesser talents and even if the translations printed here were considered less than graceful by some they were widely read. At the end of his Dedication to the Earl of Dorset and Middlesex Ozell notes "that the Misanthrope and Malade Imaginaire . are translated by other Persons whose Names I forbear to mention since they have thought fit to conceal themselves."
