All volumes tight and generally clean inside. Minor shelfwear and rubbing to bindings a little stronger on some of the edges of the five raised bands on the spines not affecting materially shelf appeal. Each play accompanied with a full page copper engraved plate measuring 9.5 by 6 inches and these are by various artists and printers too numerous to list in the entirety. Typical offsetting of these plates onto facing pages. Some foxing never disconcerting on the backs of a few plates and in the plate margins. This is overall at least a very good copy and also a sturdy set that notwithstanding its age one can very comfortably read from without apprehension. <br/><br/> Chez Lefevre, Libraire hardcover books

The portrait is an etching by the French artist Adolphe Lalauze 1834-1906 after Nolin. The other illustrations are original compositions by Lalauze. Later half burgundy gilt-stamped morocco cherry cloth raised bands top edges gilt; spine ends on volume I mended with kozo. Rubber-stamp of Paul D. Bremer St. Paul Minnesota. Very good. A lovely set translated Henri Van Laun 1820-1896 one of the eminent scholars of French literature of his time. This highly admired and heavily annotated edition is generally considered Van Laun's Magnum Opus. Sotheran quoting the Athenaeum wrote that this is "not only the best translation of Moliere in existence but the best to be hoped." – Sotheran's Price Current of Literature CCXI Jan. 1882. / "Van Laun's translation of the 'Dramatic Works' of Moliere was published in 6 vols. at Edinburgh in 1875–6 8vo with illustrations by Lalauze. It embodies much curious information derived from Langbaine and other sources concerning seventeenth and eighteenth century translations of and plagiarisms from separate plays acknowledged or unacknowledged." – DNB XX p. 132. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin known by his stage name Molière baptised January 15 1622 February 17 1673 was a French playwright and actor who is considered to be one of the greatest masters of comedy in Western literature. Among Molière's best-known works are Le Misanthrope The Misanthrope L'École des femmes The School for Wives Tartuffe ou L'Imposteur Tartuffe or the Imposter L'Avare The Miser Le Malade imaginaire The Imaginary Invalid and Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme The Bourgeois Gentleman. Born into a prosperous family and having studied at the Collège de Clermont now Lycée Louis-le-Grand Molière was well suited to begin a life in the theatre. Thirteen years as an itinerant actor helped him polish his comic abilities while he began writing combining Commedia dell'arte elements with the more refined French comedy.
