"More readily understood than Spender's poems is this allegorical drama based on the situation in Nazi Germany. The Judge is faced with the problem of judgment on the murderers of a Polish Jew. He condemns them and is in turn himself condemned. The various factions are there -- government the people the Communists the Jews. A stirring and powerful arraignment of Nazi tyranny." Kirkus Reviews September 1 1938. <br /><br />A leaflet for the Group Theatre is laid in. Spender was the theatre's literary director. <br /><br />CONDITION: Clean and unmarked although many pages are unopened along the fore edge. The dust jacket has light edge wear and signs of a small erased number on the lower wrapper. The flap corners are slightly trimmed but the original price 5s remains intact. The four unsympathetic characters wade through sadomasochistic relationships of psychological torture and manipulation plus the sexual and other physical abuse of a physically disabled person. In the context of the many miserable and brutal characters of Tennessee Williams' previous plays this may be the culminating expression of Williams' thinking. Tennessee Williams did not publish this in his lifetime possibly because it was too hot for the trade press to touch but through his agent he arranged to have Albondocani Press publish a limited fine press edition. Williams died before this took place and the edition was published posthumously by his estate. This play remains outside of Williams' usual canon and is performed on stage only sporadically and seldom. This is copy 120 of a limited edition of 150 numbered copies. This Small 8vo book is 8" x 6 1/2" unpaginated and 36 pages. Set in Palatino types and printed on Antique Laid paper. Sewn into Swedish marbled French-flapped wraps over stiff black wraps. Printed and bound by Nancy King and William Ferguson founder of both Metacom Press and Halty Ferguson Publishing. The press' single-leaf prospectus is laid in. The jacket is all there not price-clipped but has minor soiling a few small closed tears and one tiny repaired hole at the lower edge of the front panel. Completely clean inside. Four pages have an indentation or wrinkle at the lower edge probably from the binder. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white. Classic study of the 'Theatre of Marvels' or popular street theater which was practiced in Europe from 1789 to the 1860's. This study grew out of the author's work at Harvard and later the Sorbonne on this fascinating subject. Profusely illustrated in color and black & white with about 200 prints and engravings.
