Why If there's going to be a war they're the ones who will have to fight it. The strike engulfs the local college community and a psychology professor is sentenced to death for a murder he didn't commit. <br /><br />The influential theatre critic Brooks Atkinson of The New York Times referred to "Peace on Earth" as a "propaganda play" a description that the authors George Sklar and Albert Maltz would probably not disagree with. "During the course of a lively and disorderly evening 'Peace on Earth' manages to denounce scab labor capital endowed universities the detachment of college teachers the jingoism of the alumni of the class of 1917 and the indifference of the police to free speech" Atkinson wrote. The New York Times November 30 1933 page 39. <br /><br />The play was first produced by the Theatre Union Inc. on November 29 1933 at the Civic Repertory Theatre in New York. Robert Keith played the hapless professor in a performance that Atkinson praised in an otherwise hostile review. ".Robert Keith plays with a grave serenity and a decent sincerity that command respect and sympathy" Atkinson wrote. <br /><br />Copies of "Peace on Earth" are scarce in the antiquarian book market and those with dust jackets are even more elusive especially with jackets as nice as this one. Unfortunately the artist of this beautiful jacket is uncredited. This copy was previously owned by John K. Martin founder of Black Sparrow Press with his discreet book label to the rear pastedown. <br /><br />CONDITION: Near Fine with marginalia on one page a bit of foxing to the fore edge and a small book label of John K. At The Age Of Twenty Kori Began Editing And Publishing With Yanagi Muneyoshi Soetsu Founder Of The Mingei Movement And Around 1923 Became A Frequent Contributor To The Major Literary Magazines Of The Day. In 1909 Kori Torahiko Won First Prize In The Contest Held By Taiyo Sun Magazine With His Play Titled "The Matsuyama Family" Which Brought Him Into Prominence As A Promising Dramatist. His Fame Was Established When The Imperial Theatre Staged His Play Dojoji 1912. The Following Year He Left For Europe. At London Kori Met Esther Sainsbury The Poetess And They Remained Friends Till His Death. He Wrote Plays In London; His First Drama To Be Staged There Was "Kanawa" Iron Ring 1917. Another Of His Plays "Toils Of Yoshitomo" Ran For Three Weeks At The Little Theatre London. Other Plays Similarly Staged Were "Saul And David" And "Absalom." "The Toils Of Yoshitomo" Was Translated Into Several European Languages Including German French And Italian. He Was One Of The Few Japanese Writers Who Worked Abroad. Despite His Close Association With The Shirakaba School Kori In His Taste For Romantic And Decadent Literature Was At Odds With The Prevailing Shirakaba Partiality For Realist Literature Particularly That Of Tolstoy. Bill Thomas earlier won an an Oscar for his costume designs for Spartacus. Based on the book by Oscar Lewis Bartlett was co-screenwriter for the film with Cesare Zavattini who wrote the screenplay for ditector Vittorio De Sica’s Umberto D in 1952. This handsome presentation piece was bound by the noted Hollwood bookbinder the California Bookbinding Co. and has its seal on the inside of the front cover. “The Children of Sanchez is a 1978 Mexican-American drama film based on the book with the same title by Oscar Lewis. The movie's well-known soundtrack titled Children of Sanchez was created by jazz musician Chuck Mangione. All volumes very clean inside no marks. The off white dustwrappers are tanned and have a few stains to the spine of the last volume only and several closed edge tears. Two volumes have faint tan stains to top page-edge not visible internally. All text in Russian. The set is edited by V. F. Ryndin. All drawings by V.I. Kozlinskii. Additional editing and text by Elena Kurbatova and Elizaveta Berman. This set covers Russian costume design for staged productions from 1750 to 1917. In other words from the beginning of Russian drama to the Russian Revolution. All volumes are illustrated with drawings similar to fashion drawings in French and German periodicals from the late 19th century. All volumes have some color drawings as well as black & white. All volumes also have some technical details to guide the costume designers making period costumes: some of the illustrations are like pattern designs for tailors. Yes Pinter misspelled Jacques. Brunius 1906-1967 was a French actor and director. He also translated some of Pinter's plays into French including one of the plays in this book A Night Out. Thus a nice literary association. <br /><br />The book contains A Slight Ache A Night Out The Dwarfs as well as five revue sketches: Trouble in the Works The Black and White Request Stop Last to Go and Applicant. <br /><br />The title play here A Slight Ache is a dark comedy about an English couple Flora and Edward who interrogate a poor and silent match seller who stands outside their gate every day. The play was first performed on the BBC's Third Programme on July 29 1959 and starred Maurice Denham and Vivien Merchant Pinter's wife. The stage version opened on January 18 1961 at the Arts Theatre in London and starred Emlyn Williams Alison Leggat and Richard Briers. <br /><br />We find no other signed presentation copies of this book in the market. It's especially noteworthy because of Pinter's collaboration with the recipient Jacques Brunius. <br /><br />CONDITION: Light toning to page edges but otherwise clean and unmarked. Near Fine in a Very Good unclipped dust jacket that has rubbing to panels toning to upper edges of the flaps and to verso of the jacket and a few small nicks to the extremities.</p> Methuen & Co. In the play a family is forced to sell their estate at auction to pay their debts. The buyer Lopakhin plans to cut down the family's beloved cherry orchard so he can build cottages on the estate. <br /><br />These postcards feature cast members from early productions: Olga Knipper as Madame Ranevskaya the estate owner Maria Lilina as Anya her daughter Margarita Savitskaya as Varya foster daughter Stanislavsky himself as Gaev Ranevskaya's brother Leonid Leonidov as Lopakhin Vladimir Gribunin as Simeonov-Pishchik a landowner Elena Muratova as Charoltta Ivanovna a governess Alexander Artyom as Firs an elderly valet Vasily Kachalov as Trofimov a student and Ivan Moskvin as Yephikhov a bookkeeper. <br /><br />Olga Knipper was the wife of Chekhov Maria Lilina was the wife of Stanislavsky and Ivan Moskvin became director of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1943. All three were among the 39 original members of the troupe when Stanislavsky founded it in 1898 with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. <br /><br />Chekhov conceived The Cherry Orchard as a comedy but Stanislavsky turned it into a tragedy angering Chekhov. "My play opened yesterday so my mood is none too good" Chekhov wrote in a letter to author and dramatist Ivan Leontyev known as Shcheglov quoted in Laurence Senelick Anton Chekhov's Selected Plays. New York: W.W. Norton 2005 page 456. And in late March 1904 writing from Yalta Chekhov declared in a letter to his wife Olga Knipper the star of the play: "One thing I can say: Stanislavsky has butchered the play for me." Senelick page 457. <br /><br />While Chekhov may not have liked the play the public certainly did. Indeed in a note on the verso of one card an anonymous writer says translating: "we have just got back from the Art Theatre where we saw The Cherry Orchard. There are no words to tell how wonderful it was." The note appears on a card showing Stanislavsky and his wife Maria Lilina. <br /><br />A.A. Gorozhankin published two of the cards in 1911. The famous Moscow photographer Karl Fisher issued all the others. Text entirely in Russian. Profusely illustrated in both color and black and white the book showcases each production of the Kamerny founded by Alexander Tairov 1885-1950 and his wife the actress Alisa Koonen 1889-1974.<br /></p><p>Tairov brought many non-Russian productions to the Kamerny including works by Shakespeare Bertolt Brecht Eugene O'Neill George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde. Tairov's productions were known for their magnificent set and costume designs and he collaborated with some of the most acclaimed avant-garde artists of the day including Alexandra Exter and Natalia Goncharova. Indeed it's possible to see the evolution of 20th-century Russian art through the set and costume designs which reflected Cubist Constructivist Rayonist and even Art Deco influences. It was an exciting time in Soviet theatre; this era featured some of the greatest directors of the 20th century such as Stanislavsky Meyerhold Vakhtangov and of course Tairov.<br /></p><p>The Kamerny was the scene of one of the most significant plays of the Soviet theatre according to Nick Worrall in his authoritative study "Modernism to Realism on the Soviet Stage" Cambridge University Press 1989. Vsevolod Vishnevsky's Russian civil-war play Optimistic Tragedy opened at the Kamerny on December 18 1933. "It concerns particular historical events associated with the civil war in the Soviet Union but more generally it is an article of faith -- in the triumph of Life over Death of the Collective over the Individual of faith in the necessary tragedy of revolution of the necessary destruction of those who oppose revolution of hostility to the spirit of anarchism and faith in the leadership of the party." Indeed the play which is featured in this book marked an important milestone in the development of "socialist realism."<br /></p><p><br /></p><p>The Soviet government closed the Kamerny Theatre in 1949 and Tairov died a year later.
