The play opened in New York on December 8 1959 at the Anta Theatre starring Rex Harrison Natasha Parry and Roddy McDowall in a production directed by Peter Brook. Brook was Parry's husband. Unfortunately the book misspells Parry's name as Perry. Translated from the French and adapted by Lucienne Hill. 8vo. 121 pages. Wrinkles on front paste down a production error and scratch on rear cover. Otherwise about Near Fine in a white dust jacket with slightly toned spine and creased closed tear to rear panel. First Edition First Printing. <br /><br />Small Quarto 10 5/8 x 7 3/8 inches; 270 x 185 mm 31 1 pages in printed wrappers. <br /><br />A sumptuously illustrated tribute to Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes issued in 1930 one year after his death. Diaghilev rendered here as Diaghilew created one of the world's most innovative ballet and opera companies and hired some of the greatest artists of the 20th century to design sets and costumes. <br /><br />Artists represented here include Picasso Laurencin Braque Derain de Chirico Rouault Bakst and others. The book features 19 plates depicting sets and costumes with four of the plates in color. There is also a photo of Diaghilev taken several days before his death at the young age of 57. <br /><br />Michel Georges-Michel and Waldemar George have written introductions while Nathalie Gontcharova has written about costumes; the book is illustrated with several of her designs for sets and costumes. There is also a complete list of the troupe's productions and a list of all the artists who designed sets and costumes. All text is in French. <br /><br />This book should not be confused with a 1955 revised edition. An altogether wonderful tribute to the Ballets Russes. <br /><br />CONDITION: Light edge wear toning to the wrappers especially the lower wrapper. Internally clean bright and unmarked. Tipped in is a "Publisher's Weekly" article describing the signing party at Brentano's in 1952. Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket that has a half-inch chip at the bottom of the front panel where it meets the spine a few small chips on the rear panel some edge wear and soiling. Copies signed by so many of the stars are not often found in the market. Presumably a previous owner obtained the signatures during the book party at Brentano's in 1952. SCARCE signed. <br /><br />The signers are among the 150 stars featured with two-page photo spreads in this loving theatre tribute that reaches back to Lillian Russell and Sarah Bernhardt but also includes a few newcomers such as Carol Channing.</p><p>Daniel Blum the author was an authoritative journalist/historian of theatre who published an annual review of the theatre season called Theatre World. Needless to say he knew many of the actors profiled in the book.</p><p>Especially interesting are the author's comments about the actors. Marlon Brando: "He is a nonconformist and likes to shock people.He dislikes cats interviews shoes and large parties." Maureen Stapleton: "She dislikes spooky movies and books." Beatrice Pearson: "When she is depressed she spends money like a drunken sailor." Charlton Heston: "He is frank genial and outspoken but thinks actors should keep quiet on any other subject but their work." That was the Charlton Heston of 1952. He dabbled in politics later in life.</p> Greenberg books

The author Ben W. Brown 1897-1955 was a Brown University professor as well as a theatre critic and director. Fisher 1911-12. <br /><br />Twenty-six postcards each 5 1/2 x 3 3/8 inches 138 x 84 mm featuring black-and-white photos of scenes from Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard and text descriptions in Russian. <br /><br />The Cherry Orchard opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on January 17 1904 in a production directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky just six months before the death of Chekhov. In the play a family is forced to sell their estate at auction to pay their debts. The buyer Lopakhin plans to cut down the family's beloved cherry orchard so he can build cottages on the estate. <br /><br />These postcards feature cast members from early productions: Olga Knipper as Madame Ranevskaya the estate owner Maria Lilina as Anya her daughter Margarita Savitskaya as Varya foster daughter Stanislavsky himself as Gaev Ranevskaya's brother Leonid Leonidov as Lopakhin Vladimir Gribunin as Simeonov-Pishchik a landowner Elena Muratova as Charoltta Ivanovna a governess Alexander Artyom as Firs an elderly valet Vasily Kachalov as Trofimov a student and Ivan Moskvin as Yephikhov a bookkeeper. <br /><br />Olga Knipper was the wife of Chekhov Maria Lilina was the wife of Stanislavsky and Ivan Moskvin became director of the Moscow Art Theatre in 1943. All three were among the 39 original members of the troupe when Stanislavsky founded it in 1898 with Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko. <br /><br />Chekhov conceived The Cherry Orchard as a comedy but Stanislavsky turned it into a tragedy angering Chekhov. "My play opened yesterday so my mood is none too good" Chekhov wrote in a letter to author and dramatist Ivan Leontyev known as Shcheglov quoted in Laurence Senelick Anton Chekhov's Selected Plays. New York: W.W. Norton 2005 page 456. And in late March 1904 writing from Yalta Chekhov declared in a letter to his wife Olga Knipper the star of the play: "One thing I can say: Stanislavsky has butchered the play for me." Senelick page 457. <br /><br />While Chekhov may not have liked the play the public certainly did. Indeed in a note on the verso of one card an anonymous writer says translating: "we have just got back from the Art Theatre where we saw The Cherry Orchard. There are no words to tell how wonderful it was." The note appears on a card showing Stanislavsky and his wife Maria Lilina. <br /><br />A.A. Gorozhankin published two of the cards in 1911. The famous Moscow photographer Karl Fisher issued all the others. Two of them not identified as the Moscow Art Theatre production are dated 1912. <br /><br />A fascinating set of postcards depicting scenes from one of the theatre world's most acclaimed plays. <br /><br />CONDITION: Inscription in ink to the verso of one card stains or soiling to many cards lower corner of one card of Olga Knipper damaged with slight loss of text; old bookseller's stamp to the verso of half a dozen cards; all a bit rubbed or edge-worn. Although he directed only a handful of plays "his controversial theories of scene design and stagecraft gave him eminence in the European and American theater" The New York Times July 30 1966 page 25. For instance he favored three-dimensional stage effects and more innovative lighting than the traditional footlights. <br /><br />Copies of this book in the original dust jacket are scarce to the market. <br /><br />CONDITION: Rubbing to cloth fading to spine titles top edge dusty bottom edge a bit soiled. Internally a couple of stray ink marks but otherwise clean and bright. The unclipped dust jacket has some soiling nicks and chips with slight fading to text. No Edition Stated. <br /><br />Single sheet folded to create a four-panel program measuring 9 x 6 inches 230 x 150 mm when folded. Printed in blue ink on white paper stock. <br /><br />A scarce program guide for the play "Horse Eats Hat" written by Edwin Denby and Orson Welles with music by Paul Bowles. Welles directed and appeared in the play which featured Joseph Cotten Arlene Francis and many others. <br /><br />In the play adapted from a French farce a horse eats a hat "and the owner of the horse must get the owner of the hat another hat because she can't go home to her husband without it." The New York Times September 28 1936 page 14. <br /><br />"Horse Eats Hat" was performed at Maxine Elliott's Theatre in New York as part of the Federal Theatre Project during the Depression. Managing Producer: the great John Houseman. At the opening the Times informs us "Half the audience was pretty indignant and the other half quite amused.It can be fought about at a top price of 55 cents." <br /><br />OCLC shows a poster of this play held by the Library of Congress but no institutional holdings of the program guide. <b>SCARCE</b>. <br /><br />CONDITION: Vertical crease some soiling and edge wear.
