The workers beseech "The Boss" a thinly disguised Bertolt Brecht to support the uprising. The book includes the text of a speech by Grass as well as a "documentary report" on the uprising. Translated by Ralph Manheim; the book originally was published in Germany under the title "Die Plebejer proben den Aufstand." The play was controversial; many reviewers thought it was deeply unfair to Brecht because Brecht couldn't defend himself. Pinter's tragicomedy about a professor who brings his wife home to meet his working-class family. The play opened at the Aldwych Theatre in London on June 3 1965 and was performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company Peter Hall director. It opened on Broadway in 1967 and won four Tony Awards and the New York Drama Critics Award. An Easton Press "Collector's Edition." The play opened in New York on December 8 1959 at the Anta Theatre starring Rex Harrison Natasha Parry and Roddy McDowall in a production directed by Peter Brook. Brook was Parry's husband. Unfortunately the book misspells Parry's name as Perry. Translated from the French and adapted by Lucienne Hill. 8vo. 121 pages. Wrinkles on front paste down a production error and scratch on rear cover. Otherwise about Near Fine in a white dust jacket with slightly toned spine and creased closed tear to rear panel. First American Edition 1st Printing. <br /><br />Octavo 8 1/4 x 5 1/8 inches; 217x130 mm 438 2 pages in gray cloth gilt titles to spine in an unclipped illustrated dust jacket. <br /><br />The uncommon hardcover edition of these three plays all translated from the French. The title play concerns the Peasants' Revolt and the Reformation while "Kean" is an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's play about British actor Edmund Kean and "Nekrassov" is a farce about the anti-communist press. Kitty Black translated the first two plays and Sylvia and George Leeson translated "Nekrassov." Paul Rand designed the dust jacket. <br /><br />CONDITION: Some rubbing to cloth. Internally heavy offsetting from a newspaper clipping to the front end papers but otherwise tight clean and unmarked. The unclipped dust jacket has some soiling to the panels small nicks to the bottom of the spine a few small chips to the top of the lower panel creasing to lower flap and fading to the spine. The Playbill for Mamet's comedy about the Hollywood movie industry which opened at the Royale Theatre in New York and starred Madonna Ron Silver and Joe Mantegna. Rather elaborate pictorial program for the 1937 season of Jack Kirkland's "Tobacco Road" for which Henry Hull reprised the role of Lester Jeeter which he had created three years earlier. Copiously illustrated with stills from the production and reproducing the text of two New York Daily News editorials praising the play's realistic depiction of farm tenancy in the South. Described by critic Gerald Weales as "the" quintessential play of the 1930s "Tobacco Road" opened in 1934 to uniformly poor critical notices; the show nearly closed in its opening weeks then gained steam as Henry Hull's classic portrayal of the lazy ignorant sharecropper Jeeter became a word-of-mouth cause celebre. In the end "Tobacco Road" became one of the most talked-about plays of the Great Depression finally finishing its run in 1941 after nearly 3200 performances. M. Horowitz unknown books

SIGNED by Arnold Wesker on the title page and dated 12 June 78. A collection of prose pieces by the British playwright 1932-2016 including short stories a play for television and a diary written for Swedish radio just before Wesker went to Stockholm to direct the world premiere of "The Friends." Wesker is sometimes grouped among the so-called Angry Young Men of postwar British literature although he rejected that label. Even so some of his plays attack Britain's class system and the exploitation of working-class people. He also tangled at times with the British theatre establishment which he accused of anti-Semitism. Copies of this book are uncommon in the market and signed copies even more so. SCARCE. <br/><br/> CONDITION: Corners bumped some light soiling to top edge. Internally clean bright and unmarked except for a tiny stain on the front free end paper. The dust jacket has some stray white marks production error above the title. Flap corners slightly trimmed but the publisher's price is intact. A Very Good or better copy.
