A humorous and satirical history of ancient Rome recounting classical history in a light comic style from the legendary foundation to the later Republic and Empire.By Gilbert Abbott à Beckett 1811-1856 a comic writer and one of the original staff of Punch. John Leech 1817-1864 was a leading Victorian illustrator and caricaturist best known for his long association with Punch. He illustrated numerous works including A Christmas Carol and was renowned for his lively expressive drawings. In a contemporary half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally sound. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in minor loss to calf and paper with very slight loss to lower edge of front board. Rubbing to boards and spine. Cracking to front joint at head of spine. Front and rear hinges strained but holding. Previous owner's contemporary ink inscription to front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean if typically age toned with the odd spot. Slight offsetting from colour plates to facing pages. Slight loss to upper fore edge of plate facing pp. 1; very small chip to fore edge of plate facing pp. 80 not affecting the images. Good Bradbury and Evans hardcover
